Deathbound [Review]
Deathbound is a Souls-like game that decided to break the status quo. Death Bound is a party-based, soul-like game set in a modern medieval setting. Players have a party of 4 characters, which is very abnormal for a regular Souls game. In Deathbound you have 7 playable characters, each with individualized play styles. The narrative and setting in this game are truly distinctive and slightly confuses me, but in a delightful way.
Everything about Deathbound is a refreshing change of pace. The characters all speak in an archaic style, reminiscent of medieval English. Also, its setting is as though they’re living in a historical novel. Throughout the entire game, the environment is filled with futuristic elements, like cars and electricity, that contrast with seemingly ancient characters, and the characters are heavily religious. Death Bound is also very story-influenced, unlike regular Souls-like games. Usually, in a Souls-like game, players have to use world context or a wiki to figure out what's going on.
This game carries itself like a regular narrative-driven story, with cutscenes and general character narration. The game isn't particularly difficult, so players who are new to the Souls-like genre can enjoy this game. It is a fantastic entry-level game for anyone wanting that gameplay style but with a more traditional and less intimidating story and world. Deathbound is a fantastic and interesting spin on the honestly oversaturated market of Souls-like games, and I think it is worth the time of every fan of Souls-like games, especially if you would like something different.
