Ufouria The Saga 2 [Review]

Ufouria The Saga 2 is a wonderful sequel to an NES/Famicom game many won’t know of as it wasn’t released in the States. Thankfully, Ufouria The Saga 2 is getting a global release allowing several new players the chance to enjoy this wonderful game. Ufouria 2 was developed by Sunsoft and published by Sunsoft and Red Art Games. The game is set in a fantastically weird world, with cutesy characters, in a beautifully animated art style that is reminiscent of claymation or stop motion. The style reminds me a bit of Yoshi’s Wooly World for the Wii U. The characters are flocked to look fuzzy while the rest of the world has a clay and paper cut-out look to it. It feels like an arts and crafts project.

While I do adore the style of this game for how cute it is, I should talk about the gameplay as well. There are four characters that you get to switch between with slightly different abilities. The “cat” can grip onto ice without sliding and the ghost can float further for longer jumps. You can switch between the characters on the fly so it doesn’t feel annoying to go between them. The game itself is a platformer, you run around collecting coins and defeating bosses to find this alien that is covering the world in purple goo. The bosses remind me of Megaman, you walk up to a door that opens and you are locked in a small box room with a boss running and jumping around. Luckily this game is nowhere near as difficult as Megaman and is quite easy. Ufouria 2 being easy isn't a problem at all as this game was clearly made for a younger audience. The bathroom humor and the very simple controls and platforming make it pretty clear this game is for a newer more casual audience. Funny enough because even in cutesy games made for kids I will find a way to accidentally make the game more difficult for myself.

The game isn’t just cute but it’s also silly. Some of the animations made me laugh because of how absurd they were. When you unlock the ability to crouch when the cat crouches, he lays on his back and pulls himself forward with his feet. The way it’s done is such a fun and clever way to give a bit of personality to these characters. Oh, and when I said “unlock the ability to crouch” there’s slightly more to that. There’s a vending machine where you buy items and abilities that will change the world around you. You can buy springs which will put springs all over the world for you to use to collect coins. The more helpful items are the abilities like crouching or the perfect butt bounce. You see, your main attack in this game is a ground pound that can be upgraded so if you do it perfectly you get an extra coin. And the more coins you get, the more abilities you will be able to buy.

The levels will also change on their own. When buying an upgrade the levels will have more areas for you to explore with that ability. Sometimes the level layout changes just slightly, like one time I went into the icy cave and everything was flipped. It’s not game-changing or anything but it is a nice way to make the levels feel fresh because you’ll have to replay levels to get coins.

This game is mindless fun. While it may be easy I also don’t care. It’s aimed at a younger audience so of course the game will be easy for me. While the target audience is children this game is fun for everyone and I would recommend it to adults as well. The game isn’t complicated and is great for just a calm and relaxing platformer. Ufouria The Saga 2 deserves an 9/10 and is available now for Playstation 5, Xbox Series S and X, Nintendo Switch, and
