Recapping Warframe’s “Devstream 184”

Digital Extremes just wrapped up their 184th Devstream, with the focus being on what’s coming to Warframe after the recent 1999 update. While the anticipated Infestation update has been delayed to the dismay of many, the Devstream quickly answers why. The team at Digital Extremes have been hard at work to make 1999 the biggest update yet for Warframe. Now it’s being taken further with everything coming soon with Rebecca Ford, Warframe’s Creative Director, describing this batch of future content as “1999 part two”. Just so you know, there’s a lot here and that’s putting things lightly. Consider that a warning.

To start things off light, there is a Year in Review live on Warframe’s website right now. Players get to see their most used weapons, frames, most played mission types, it’s all very in depth. You can also compare to how the rest of the world chose to go about their Warframe experience. Also, Digital Extremes have launched an official Warframe wiki page. This has been requested for a long time, and it is finally here. At the moment it is only available in English, with more languages coming soon.

With Warframe’s annual Tennocon, Digital Extremes aims to make it bigger and better every year. The team has rented out RBC Place London with the promise of it being “bigger than a parking lot”, a fun nod at last year’s Tennocon. They only discussed day 1, which announced the first ever Tennoconcert. A live performance from some of the greatest tracks in Warframe. Day 1 will also host the cosplay contest. This two day event takes place July 18-19, with tickets on sale at Feb 7th at 2 PM ET. Don’t mean to sound like a total spokesperson, but I say that in full more so as a warning. Tickets will sell out very quickly. If you do not wish to attend Tennocon in person, there will be a digital pack available.

February is the start for what is presumably going to be Warframe’s biggest year yet. For starters, the Rhino Heirloom Collection releases on February 6th. The skin was revealed earlier in the month, but the Devstream shows the skin in full with some unique features. Iron Skin is now customizable with any other variations of Iron Skin you may have available for Rhino.

February 6th is also the launch of Star Days, Warframe’s Valentine’s Day event. There are more community glyphs to purchase at reduced rates per the feedback received last year, granting everyone a chance to get everything. Last but not least, yet again on the 6th, the new Nightwave volume launches complete with 1999 themed cosmetics, including a Techrot armor set.

The long awaited new Prime was revealed, and it is no other than Lavos. Lavos looks at energy cooldowns like suggestions, so to have that in conjunction with the returning Dual Zoren Prime, Lavos Prime looks incredible to say the least. Gameplay of Lavos Prime has yet to be shown, but for now we can gawk at it’s incredible design.

The real meat and potatoes for what’s coming to Warframe content wise is the announcement of the next update: Techrot Encore. A much more in-depth for what’s all coming will be shown at the next Devstream on February 28th. For now though, we got a little taste for what’s to come.

There are the smaller things such as cosmetics. There will be 8 new hairstyles available to equip on your Operator and Drifter. The hairstyles are all inspired by the six members of the Hex, Loid, and Major Rulsaka. There are also going to be Scaldra inspired outfits which have a rugged beaten down militaristic vibe to it that just radiates such a sick energy, no pun intended.

However, this update will bring the biggest batch of weapons that Warframe has seen for a single update. We are talking about 17 weapons in total, 13 Technocyte Coda weapons and 4 Scaldra weapons. Elenanor will be selling the Coda weapons once they’re available. Those guns aren’t going to mean much if you have nothing to try them on so that’s where we get to see a bit for what’s to come when actually facing the music (sorry).

There are antivirus mods that will drop during any Techrot missions that equip onto your Parazon. It’s a similar system to say the Kuva system, but instead of constantly trying to open relics to get the mod you need, it’ll be known prior. Once prepared, you have to go into a mission to find the Coda and engage in a Duet fight, where you have to fight two boy band members at once. When clearing out a Technocyte Coda, you are guaranteed at least one cosmetic item every time, such as new dance moves that are being added. Technocyte Codas can be summoned to fight alongside you, or assigned as a crew member on your Railjack.

Warframe is a marathon, not a sprint, as said by Rebecca herself. Things can always be improved and as always the future will bring plenty of quality of life updates. 1999 brought the KIM messenger which is where everyone poured their hearts out for a New Years’ kiss. However once you finish 1999’s story, there’s nothing else to talk about. Coming soon, there will be more conversations that will occur once you reach Rank 5 with The Hex. You’ll be able to play through every single conversation option as well, just to see where everything can go. Plus, your partners will be moving around your house so this way they aren’t just always creepily stuck in one place.

Aura Formas are going away entirely to be replaced with Omni Formas. This is a forma that has a universal polarity slot for every mod available, minus Umbra. The awkward game of “how fast can I leave this public squad” will be gone as public lobbies will disband after a mission if randomly matchmade. When selling mods in your base of operations, there will be a quick select menu to choose hundreds of mods at once to conveniently sell. It is also fool proof and won’t automatically target high value mods such as Rivens or Archons.

The last big announcement actually comes from Jake Bowen and Mark Holcomb of the band Periphery, who make an appearance to say they’re working on brand new music for Warframe. They also go on to announce that they are helping out in creating the 60th Warframe: Temple. More of Temple will be shown at the next Devstream, but all I can say the metalhead in me is screaming with joy. If not for the music, for the fact that there are 4 more Protoframes coming soon as well. Who they will be remains to be seen.

The folks over at Digital Extremes have been incredibly hard at work and it shows from every angle. Streams like this create such a strong connection between the player and the developer and it makes it feel like this is our game just as much as it is theirs. In case you aren’t caught up to 1999 and would like to be, follow Warframe’s official quest guide to get there as quickly as possible. I can’t wait to get “Party of Your Lifetime” stuck in my head again.
