PAX West Spotlight: Killsquad

You ever feel like playing Diablo but don't feel like putting 30+ hours into the game just to get 4 skills? Do you want the fun action looter experience with none of the grind? Then Killsquad may be the game for you!

Killsquad is an instance-based action RPG. Think Left 4 Dead but with ARPG mechanics or a co-op League of Legends. You and up to three friends (or three random people if you are like me and have no friends) select characters and jump into a match at level 1. As you play through the instance, you will slowly gain levels and spend upgrade points to power up different abilities. When you finish the instance, the loot you acquire can change how that class plays the next time.

I tried out the gunner class which meant I spent a lot of time kiting enemies. The abilities were fun to use and made me feel fairly strong. The charge shot felt especially powerful after I upgraded it to leave behind a trail of fire. The abilities also felt unique enough that I was often choosing the best attack for the situation instead of spamming all of my abilities whenever they came off of cooldown.

Without seeing how the classes change with the different gear, it is difficult to say whether Killsquad will have lasting appeal. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the round I played and am looking forward to hopping back into it with some of my newfound non-friends in the future!
