Mythic Realms [Review]

Mythic Realms is an innovative mixed-reality VR game that leverages room-scale gameplay with its use of the Meta Quest 3's passthrough cameras to merge the physical environment with a fantastical digital realm. Players engage in activities such as resource gathering, including cutting down trees for logs and mining, all within their own home. Players will engage in combat with up to three chooses of weapon from the start of the game. These include melee ( Sword) , ranged (Bow), and magic (Staff) all weapons usable for blocking and attacking. The game progression centers on character/world advancement, material acquisition, and crafting superior weaponry to confront diverse enemies, ranging from skeletons and slimes to goblins and formidable bosses. Mythic Realms is also a rogue-lite so if you die you will lose equipment.

In general, Mythic Realms is a superior VR experience, reminiscent of Vanishing Realms, released for the HTC VIVE in 2016. A distinguishing feature of Mythic Realms, compared to Vanishing Realms, is its augmented reality integration through the Quest headset's passthrough cameras. The mixed reality implementation is seamless, with the augmented reality functionality transforming your home. This immersive experience is further enhanced by a dedicated VR town where players receive quests prior to returning to their augmented reality space. Completing objectives such as fishing, resource donation, and retrieving quests from NPCs expands the village population within the non-augmented world.

Mythic Realms delivers a comprehensive RPG experience that is both interactive and engaging. The initial setup presented minor challenges, specifically, the absence of a teleporter during the introductory sequence, requiring a restart and room-scale recalibration. Additionally, the fixed location of the portal to the augmented world is a bit inconvenient, although this is largely attributable my chosen room configuration rather than a complete game flaw. Even with these minor issues, it stands as the absolute best VR title I have ever played and a the most exhilarating augmented reality experience currently available. The seamless blending of familiar surroundings with fantastical elements creates a captivating and unique immersive experience and is a must-play for anyone with  Meta Quest 3.
