Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 - Episode 12 [Review]
By: Mithrandiel
Well, after 6 years, 37 episodes and two OVAs, Mob Psycho 100 came to a heartfelt and wholesome conclusion today.
Still lost in his fury, and having dispensed with all of the forces that were deployed to try to stop him, Mob’s “???” form continues its destructive march towards the park to meet with Tsubomi.
Reigen and Serizawa make a last ditch effort to get through to him, though Serizawa is forced to withdraw early on. Reigen is exposed to the full brunt of Mob’s unrestrained powers, and despite being tossed around, through sheer stubbornness (and with the help of a certain someone), he’s finally able to confess to Mob: he has no powers. His transparency shocks Mob back to consciousness, though his “true” self still is in control.
Further encouraged by Reigen that he can leave his powers behind, Mob reconciles with the unstable part of his subconscious and emerges from his rampage a new, “complete” self. He makes his pitch to Tsubomi at the park, and while he is rejected (and rightly disappointed/upset), the series concludes with Mob pursuing his passions with the Body Improvement Club, deepening his friendships at school, and ultimately throwing a surprise party for his mentor and friend, Reigen.
The final scene is Mob laughing sincerely, an indication that he’s no longer limiting his emotions.
I’ve been a big fan of the series from the start, and while the final season wasn’t nearly as action-packed as the first two, it provided a satisfying emotional conclusion for our hero.
We’ve seen such growth from a lot of the characters in Mob Psycho 100 - and the closing arc brought many of those developments to the forefront. From the former Boss of Claw refusing to sacrifice himself and abandon his son in the process, to Teru’s assertion of being Mob’s rival while protecting innocent civilians - these snapshots reminded us of the amazing cast of characters that helped make Mob Psycho 100 such a beloved series.
While I’m sad to say goodbye to Mob Psycho, I am happy with how the series ended. With stunning visuals, great characters, a compelling narrative, and a set of opening themes that I never skip, it has a comfortable membership among some of my favorite anime of all time.
Fight on, Mob!
