Gamescom 2017 - Xbox

By: AlanVThe Xbox event at Gamescom 2017 was a more subdued affair when in comparison to their E3 show. They had some hosts sitting on a couch interviewing game developers and members of the Xbox team. Trailers for upcoming games were sprinkled in throughout the talks. Just about every trailer that made it on screen corresponded to titles that already made their debuts. The titles on display were:

  • Assassins Creed Origins
  • Player Unknown Battlegrounds
  • Jurassic World Evolution
  • ReCore Definitive Edition
  • Super Lucky's tale
  • Halo Wars 2: Awakening the Nightmare (DLC)
  • Forza Motorsport 7
  • State of Decay 2
  • World of Tanks War Stories
  • Sea of Thieves
  • Middle Earth: Shadow of War
  • Cuphead
  • Surviving Mars

The only game on the list to even move the needle is Jurrasic World Evolution. Players will be able to build their very own dinosaur theme park. Be prepared to possibly be digested by a Tyrannosaurus Rex in 2018.ReCore Definitive Edition is just a complete face plant. It’s not a very good game, and they spent quite a bit during the live stream hyping it up. The trailer for it kept referring to it as a remaster with “higher resolution” graphics. How they have the gall to try and paint this as a remaster when the game has been out for the less than a year is beyond comprehension.Minecraft is an absolute juggernaut, and Microsoft pulled out all the stops by creating a special edition Xbox One S that is completely Minecraft themed. The console itself looks like a chunk of dirt with some grass, while the controller looks like a creeper. There is also a separate controller design that looks like a pig. A lot of kids’ heads are going to explore when they get this as a gift. The live stream as capped off with the unveiling of the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition. It’s similar to the Day One Edition the Xbox One had when it first launched. It’ll have some special writing on the console and controller that says Project Scorpio, and the packaging it comes in harkens back to the original Xbox design. The weird part about this announcement is that Major Nelson stated that the vertical stand is exclusive to this version of the Xbox One X. Seriously? This event by Microsoft could have been handled better. A set of trailers, and interviews that would’ve have been far less awkward, could’ve just been rolled out on YouTube as separate clips. This option is far more palatable than having to sit through the 90-minute live stream. Also, please stop trying to make Mixer (Xbox version of Twitch) a thing.
