Assassination Classroom Season Two Part Two (Review)

I'm back with the last part of Assassination Classroom! The second half of season two is sure to make you laugh, cry, and learn! If you missed the first half of season two, you can read my review of it here!With a lot of loose ends, Assassination Classroom wastes no time in tying them up. The second half of the season starts with Kaede attacking Koro Sensei with tentacles of her own, revealing her true identity: Akari Yukimura. She is the younger sister of previous E Class teacher, Aguri Yukimura, who was slain by Koro Sensei. Kaede disguised herself to infiltrate E Class and exact revenge on Koro Sensei.With her tentacles reaching a near fatal point for Kaede, Nagisa swoops in and kisses Kaede senseless. This gives Koro Sensei time to remove Kaede’s tentacles. Kaede slowly recovers, as we finally receive our backstory on Koro Sensei.Once operating as The Reaper, Koro Sensei was a renowned and dangerous assassin. He was captured by Yanagisawa (the mysterious hooded man) and brought to his lab to be experimented on. While there, he met Aguri, and the two soon developed feelings for each other. Koro Sensei’s body changed over time to become a more streamlined killing machine. After a while, the scientists at the lab realize his body is unstable and will destroy itself and the world in a year. This revelation occurs after a rat aboard the International Space Station injected with the tentacle serum explodes, destroying the moon. Learning this, Koro Sensei attempts to escape the lab, while Aguri is fatally wounded by one of Yanagisawa’s traps. With her dying breath, Aguri asks Koro Sensei to watch over her E Class.The class, torn over killing over saving their teacher, ultimately decides to save Koro Sensei. The obtain data from the International Space Station, and learn there is a less than 1% chance of Koro Sensei exploding. Just when it seems like the show will have a happy ending, the government comes along and ruins it. Deciding that a 1% risk is still too great, the government decides to contain and assassinate Koro Sensei. The students prepare to rescue him, only for Yanagisawa and the new Reaper to come in and attack as well. Kaede prepares to attack the pair and assist Koro Sensei, only to be killed in the process. The rage at seeing his student die fills Koro Sensei with the energy needed to kill Yanagisawa and the Reaper.Left weak by the battle, Koro Sensei presents the students with a gift: Kaede’s blood. He uses his skills to bring her back to life, and collapses. Tear stricken, Nagisa deals the fatal blow to Koro Sensei, successfully passing the assassination classroom. After the deed is done, the students return to their classroom and find Koro Sensei’s final gift: their diplomas, yearbooks, and a guidebook of wisdom.The students of E class graduate from Kunugigaoka Academy, and go on to make their teacher proud. Years later, they return to the E Class campus mountain. Using the money they were award for assassinating their teacher, the buy the mountain. They work together to tidy up the old building, and catch up. Meanwhile, Nagisa, having followed in his teacher’s footsteps, becomes a teacher at a delinquent school. Using all of the skills he learned from his mentor, he begins to get the students into shape.The second half of the season did a lot for the show in terms of character development. Koro Sensei isn't just some aloof killing machine for the sake of it. He's a really complex character that did his best to fulfill his dying love’s wish. Even the students had reasons for wanting to kill or save Koror Sensei. It was nice to see a show not make the characters vote yes or no because the plot made them. All decisions made were in line with their character, and any change to that occurred out of growth of the character.Assassination Classroom’s animation style maintains the same level of greatness. I was a little disappointed that there were no new Koro Sensei faces, but was excited with what I had. I really enjoyed how they managed to age the students without having them look weird or totally different. The second half of the season also ushered in a new opening and ending theme song, both of which were excellent. The song that plays during Koro Sensei’s death was absolutely heartbreaking, and added depth to the scene I wasn't expecting.One thing I really enjoy is lists breaking down different aspects of the show. The bonus features provide me with a list of the Top Ten Moments from season two. With a lot of great moments, the number one moment is the final class roll call. It is equal parts heartwarming and heart wrenching, capturing all of the emotion that has built up over the course of the show. Also included in the bonus features is commentary for episode 23, textless opening and closing themes, and trailers.This show has a ton of rewatchability. With all the revelations in the second half of this season, a rewatch seems necessary to digest it all. On top of that, the whole show is funny, heartwarming, and action-packed.
