Creepy Tale: Some Other Place is a suitably creepy adventure, just as advertised.

Creepy Brothers’ latest adventure game, Creepy Tale: Some Other Place, weaves a grim fairy tale brimming with character and atmosphere. The game’s storybook aesthetic and air of mystery make for a captivating experience.

Young Martin decides to go fishing instead of mushroom hunting with his brothers. When he’s alone, a strange, hairy creature approaches Martin, making strange noises he doesn’t understand. Frustrated that Martin won’t follow, the creature grabs Martin’s bucket of fish and runs into a hollow tree. Martin gives chase, and soon finds himself stuck in Some Other Place, far from his family’s cottage in the forest. Now, Martin must find a way back home.

Some Other Place is the fourth game in the Creepy Tales series. It’s an adventure game best played with a controller. Martin can walk around, examine objects, talk to other characters, and use items from his inventory. You’ll also have to solve a few puzzles involving pushing buttons and setting dials or switches.

The game took me around three hours to complete. There were two puzzles I just couldn’t figure out that I ended up resorting to YouTube for help to solve. Both of these were self-contained machine puzzles. All of the environmental puzzles in the game didn’t cause me much trouble after some careful observation. I don’t think the puzzles that stumped me were unfair; I just got too frustrated and impatient to deduce the logic and gave up.

Creepy Tale’s hand drawn 2D art and sound design are wonderful. I was completely absorbed, enthralled by the game’s world. I really loved the design of the world’s creatures and monsters. I wouldn’t call the game scary, rather it’s creepy, as the title suggests, though it may be terrifying and too graphic for young players. There’s a bit of blood and gore in the game.

This was my first experience with the series and now I plan to check out the earlier games. Some Other Place leaves some tantalizing questions unanswered about its backstory and the mechanics of its world; I definitely appreciate that some things are left unexplained. The game ends telling us more is coming, and I can’t wait.

Creepy Tale: Some Other Place is available now on Steam for PC.

Overall Score: 8/10
