BlazBlue Entropy Effect [Review]

BlazBlue Entropy Effect is a Rouge-Lite game that is very different than all of its previous entries in the past. BlazBlue is typically a fighting game but has evolved into a Rouge-Lite. This genre change is welcome and is a good way to spice up the franchise and story for this series. Honestly, games like these that spin off from a generalized formula these companies are used to, are a very good way to flush out characters and give them a bit more of a following from players who do not typically play fighting games. Similar to how League of Legends characters are now spinning into various genres like fighting games, adventure games, and even turned-based RPGs. The graphics of Entropy Effect are gorgeous, the colors pop and are very vibrant with beautiful and assumed to be ray-traced neon glow. I can't tell if this game is hand drawn or what art technique was used to make this game so damn beautiful, I am blown away by this game's visual style. It is also worth noting this game works with ultra-wide displays. I have never played any kind of sidescroller platforming game or Metroid-style game on Ultra-wide before, it's a game changer. The monitor I'm using is a 49-inch Ultrawide Samsung Odyssey G9.

The music on BlazBlue Entropy Effect is also very peaceful and is one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a game in a long time. Games don't typically use the Synthwave genre of music too often unless the game is trying to emulate an 80s aesthetic. This game has 9 playable characters, all from the main roster of BlazBlue. My personal favorate is Mai. Each character comes with their personal skills and playstyles, much like the fighting game. For example, Ragna has a skill that drains his HP but will regain it while damaging the enemy and the damage will increase based on how much HP you have left. BlazBlue Entropy Effect has quickly become one of my favorite handheld games and is so vibrant and beautiful on the Steam Deck OLED. While at home, if I'm unwilling to sit in front of my PC, then the obvious choice when relaxing in bed is the Steam Deck OLED or the ROG Ally. This game does run very well on both devices but for this review, I played the game on The Steam Deck OLED and PC.

Small word of advice; any player wanting a challenge should play this on the hard difficulty. During my very long run on Normal Difficulty, it took a little while before I died. I just mowed through the game, killed bosses, and got skills in, what felt like a never-ending run. Normal is a bit too easy. That aside, I enjoyed my runs. The large combo system made the fast-paced combat feel fresh every time a fight was to start. Since this game is a rouge-lite there are several options in how players can customize their moves and abilities. Being surrounded and then mowing down your enemies always makes me feel dramatically overpowered and once the battlefield has calmed down to a deafening silence it gives the player a sense of power and satisfaction. BlazBlue Entropy Effect is a very fun and unique spin-off of the beloved fighting game franchise and, for me, it breathes life into an otherwise dying franchise that has needed change. In my opinion, this was a welcome change but it doesn't go without saying I would love an updated traditional BlazBlue fighting game. Street Fighter, Tekken, Goru Mou, King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, and Guilty Gear as examples have all made comebacks and have had stylized changes to suit current-day gaming visuals and aesthetics and have all benefited greatly from it. BlazBlue entropy Effect is available now for PC via Steam for 19.99
