Wastelands #1 Kickstarter Review

Among the VAST ocean of comic campaigns on Kickstarter, Wastelands is a refreshing tall glass of water that will leave you refreshed and asking for more. The cyberpunk spaghetti western weaves the tale of a young female protagonist on a mission of revenge which leads her to the mining town of Cold Water. Among the multitudes of outlaws and “corpos”, our titular character searches for answers and recompense.

Wastelands #1 was created, written and illustrated by Ray Caburnay and lettered by Amal Desai. Within the first 2 pages, Wastelands successfully immerses the reader into the world with a clear sense of tone and stunning visuals. Despite the pressing nature of the revenge narrative, humor is expertly woven in to help fully realize our main characters.

The art. THE. ART! From the very first panel, my eyes were glued to the page. It can only be described as simplistic complexity. The use of color, space, line work and texture are a joy to behold. It feels familiar and yet completely unique. The constant alteration of paneling and perspective generate a perfect narrative flow. Even if everything mentioned above was stripped away, Wastelands would still have a strong sense of heart that begs to be further explored.

If you haven’t gleamed this so far, I’m very much a fan of Wastelands. It is currently live on Kickstarter and very much deserves communal support. Trust me, you want this comic in your hands! You can help bring this project to life by clicking right HERE to visit the Kickstarter page.
