Valkyria Chronicles 4: Memoirs From Battle Premium Edition (Unboxing)

I recently shared my thoughts on the latest entry of the Valkyria Chronicles franchise: Valkyria Chronicles 4. With unique visuals and an engrossing combat system, as well as a plot that's just different enough to capture a new generation of strategy RPG fans, it's a solidly entertaining game that has the misfortune of being released within weeks of Spider Man, with Red Dead Redemption 2 not far behind.
Still, different strokes for different folks - and if strategy RPGs are your thing, you can't miss Valkyria Chronicles 4!
Now, if you're looking to go "all in" on this game, our friends at Sega were kind enough to send over the "Memoirs from Battle" premium edition. Let's take a look and see what it has to offer the dedicated fans of Squad E!
The box is massive, first of all. No banana for scale, but it measures just over a foot on its longest side, and nearly 8 inches wide.
Let's remove the outer sleeve...
Some cool aesthetic choices here: the squad photo, unit insignias, etc. Makes it look like a tucked-away shoebox of memories. One might even say it contains...memoirs from battle...
Let's dive in -
The game is prominently displayed alongside the vinyl model of the Hafen. Surprisingly the game isn't featured in a steelbook, which you might expect to accompany a premium edition such as this one. Alas, it's a standard case for you! Beneath it is a code that unlocks two additional missions as well.
Separated from the game with a thick plastic material is the Hafen replica. Unfortunately it's not 1:1 ratio, but it's got a good size and weight to it as a decorative piece.
Finally, resting at the bottom of the box is a replica of Claude Wallace's journal from the war:
While it would have contained spoilers if it was true-to-form, I do wish it had the images and chapters of the game inside. However, it does feature over 100 pages of art and lore (in English, French, and German) on the various characters of Valkyria Chronicles 4.
The journal has a good feel to it, though it didn't go with the leather-bound look, or even attempt to replace it with a faux-material. Still, it features nice, thick pages and vibrant color throughout.
With the full game retailing for $60, and the premium edition selling for $100, I would say that for most collectors, the extra $40 is worthwhile, namely considering the hefty art book and your own mini tank*!
