Twig #4 [Review]
By: Mithrandiel
Skottie Young's endearing tale continues in this week's release, as we find our aspiring placeling doing his best to set things in order - but presented with nearly impossible choices in the process. While Twig is able to continue working through the checklist of "to-dos" as provided by his dad, it seems that his unconventional decisions at every turn may ultimately doom his journey.
The art style continues to maintain its trademark whimsy and richness - with unconventional monsters and allies that are equal parts adorable and odd.
The sweeping scope of Twig's adventure is honestly very impressive - the book continues to lay out a grand journey, and communicates the distance traveled and challenges overcome in an effective and compelling way. Not only that, but the moments of tension and peril are fleeting, but fun. A perfect balance for an adventure series targeted at younger audiences.
Of course, nestled within the ridiculous monsters and perilous scenarios are moments of insight and valuable lessons of doing the right thing, with nuggets of wisdom that readers of all ages can walk away with.
With a limited run, the pacing can be hard to manage - overall I think Skottie's done some great balancing on the pacing, but there are definitely parts of this issue that drag a bit, particularly in the latter half.
Still, this was another great issue of Twig - and it continues to shape up to be a great foundation for a future animated series or action/adventure game in the not too distant future!
