Tokyo Mew Mew New Episode 6 Recap and Impressions

Alrighty friends we are at the halfway point of Tokyo Mew Mew New. After the last episode fell flat--at least for me--episode 6 picks right back up. It's the best the show has ever been and wraps up part one on a high note. While it had its lows as well as its highs, this episode proves the journey up to this point has been worth it.

Episode 6 "Hear My Voice! I Will Surpass Myself" Recap

The Mew Mews head to the TV studio where Zakuro will be filming. Very predictably, there's a security guard to stop unwanted visitors. After a few failed attempts the girls finally managed to sneak in as backup dancers.

They met up with Zakuro. Ichigo informs Zakuro that Kish is targeting her, and the other girls start to push to ask Zakuro to join the team. Mint suddenly cuts in and tells Zakuro that they'll stick to the Mew Mew business and Zakuro can pretty much continue doing her idol acting thing.

The guard finds the girls and immediately chases them away from Zakuro. After getting away the three girls question Mint, wondering why she accepted Zakuro's refusal to join the girls. Mint dodges the question, reminding them that they need to find a way back into the studio before Kish arrives.

Zakuro goes to her rehearsal, but she's unable to get the Mew Mews, namely Mint, off her mind. She blanks out, lost in thought, and requests a redo, a first in her career.

Ichigo finds her way to Zakuro's room after the rehearsal. The two characters talk, as Zakuro has some questions. The first thing she wonders is if the group really doesn't want her to join. Ichigo tells her that she wants Zakuro to join the team, but she trusts Mint said what she said for good reason. From there conversation ensues where Ichigo explains that her goal is to save the world. While the main character doubts she can do it herself, she believes they can do it as a team. Zakuro doesn't quite understand and excuses herself to go perform.

Not that Ichigo has time to do much after. Kish appears in all his glory to crash Zakuro's performance.

To be fair, Kish may be hard to take seriously most of the time, but he's fairly intimidating in this episode. Even if the jellyfish monsters things he summons aren't. I guess murder is something he's really passionate about after romancing earth women. And to his credit, he does succeed in nearly murdering Zakuro, but thankfully the Mew Mews (namely Mint) show up in the nick of time.

Mint gives a stirring speech about how Zakuro 's music is inspiration enough for the world, and motivation for Mint to continue to do better as a person. She will protect Zakuro--all she asks is that her queen go ahead and sing.

What follows is Zakuro singing what we call in the music world a bop. I've added it to my Spotify playlist and everything. The other Mews Mews are moved by Mint's words and join in protecting the idol. The fight scene that follows timed to the music is a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed it.

Kish is never that easily defeated because you know...that would be too easy. He combines the jellyfish into some Pokemon-like loch ness monstrosity which ends the fun and games. The Mew Mews absolutely get thrashed, and Zakuro gets to stare on in horror as they fight a losing battle to protect her.

Like what would YOU call it

Zakuro on seeing Mint clearly defeated yet still trying to protect her

Mint's passion gets through to Zakuro, and she at long last transforms (in quite the bad-ass transformation sequence) to join the Mew Mews. And dang, she is more powerful than the other four combined. Alien Loch Ness Mon is quickly banished by the queen.

There's one problem though--during the fight, the cameras were rolling the entire time on Live TV. The news crew rushes in, and Ichigo, under pressure, fesses up and reveals the Mew Mews to the world.

The episode ends with Zakuro confirming that she will fight alongside the Mew Mews. And thus the roster is now complete.
