Tokyo Mew Mew New Episode 4 Recap and Impressions

Welcome back to the week-long catching up on Tokyo Mew Mew New marathon! I think the show really comes into its own in Episode 4.

First off, there's a new face at the cafe! Pudding has joined the staff...which I'm sure violates a lot of child labor laws! Before getting too worked up let's be honest with ourselves--that's far from the most problematic thing this show has done.

And she's pretty okay with it

On the adorable side, Lettuce is quite fond of her new companion.

And it finally occurs to Ichigo that this situation is kinda messed up...

None of this is really of any consequence, and the episode moves on to the next task at hand...recruiting the last Mew Mew. Mew Mew Zakuro has been difficult to approach as she's a rising star who's busy acting/modeling/singing/not hanging out with commoners. Of note, Mint is a huge fan of Zakuro, and it's very cute.

Mint has found an opportunity for the gang to talk to her about saving the world. Zakuro is going to be at an open audition judging the event. All the Mew Mews need to do is show up, really.

Well except for Pudding. She's too young for the audition...yet not too young to work at the cafe!

Most of the episode from there covers the Mew Mews working their way through the audition. It's mostly fluff, but it's entertaining fluff. Watching the girls interact with each other and the environment is where the show is at its best.

Pudding, having snuck in, crashes the final stage where the girls act out a scene. This throws everyone for a loop. With the scene floundering, Zakuro jumps in and absolutely steals the show. She even sings a song! I thought it was kind of strange, but all the characters in the show seemed to dig it.

From there, the show cuts to Zakuro brooding on the roof. The Mew Mews find her up there and come out to engage her in what will be the strangest conversation of her life. Or they would if Kish wasn't there, Team Rocket style.

This unhinged look is great

Fighting ensues as he unleashes a flock of chimera birds on the girls. Unfortunately, the girls haven't quite figured out their synergy. Mint unleashes an arrow only for Pudding to entrap it in, well, pudding. All in all, they're kinda getting their butts' kicked.

When the birds turn on Zakuro she finally transforms as her grey wolf DNA activates. She easily defeats the aliens and Kish flees.

Zakuro's going to be a great addition to the team. Or would be, if she wanted to join. She does not. Saving the world is a group activity, and Zakuro is, well a "lone wolf" as the saying goes.

In what has to be the most heartbreaking moment of the series so far, Mint tries to stop her only to fail. Zakuro declares Mint, the girl who has spent the entire episode stanning her, annoying before leaving them all behind.

Bit of a low blow

I give this episode an enthusiastic 4/5. With the mix of cute girls doing cute things and drama, this is the most engaged I've been! The bar has been raised and I'll be expecting a little more of the show going forward.

Did you like the episode? Dislike it? Let us know in the comments!
