Tokyo Ghoul: re - Volume 6 (Review)

The battle rages on in Tokyo Ghoul: re Volume 6 as Sasaki faces off against Eto. The battle is brutal and the stress triggers old memories of his time as Kaneki. The memories allow him to regain enough strength to overpower and defeat Eto. Although Eto is able to escape, Sasaki has won and receives commendations and a promotion to Assistant Special Investigator and leaves the Quinx Squad. His memories of Tsukiyama also return and he is able to escape as well.Unfortunately not everyone is as lucky as these three. Shirazu loses his life while battling Ghouls, leaving the rest of the Q squad in emotional turmoil. The sudden loss of their leader allows Urie to step in once more to lead the Quinx Squad, and the team picks up some new members along the way.Just as Sasaki left, so too does Mutsuki, who ends up joining the Hachikawa Squad. The Hachikawa Squad travel to Rushima, an island that was used as a defense outpost during World War II. The rumor is that Rushima is the hideout location of the Aogiri Tree, and it’s up to the Hachikawa Squad to verify. While there the Hachikawa Squad suffers an ambush from a group of ghouls. The ghouls quickly decimate their team, forcing Mutsuki into hiding. They aren’t able to rest for long as Torso quickly finds them and captures them.While all of that is happening, Sasaki is hot on Eto’s trail. Realizing that Eto is actually his favorite author Sen Takatsuki, Sasaki quickly gets to work laying a trap for her. With the help of her publicist, Sasaki succeeds in arresting her. At her request, Sasaki allows Takatsuki to schedule a final press conference to announce her departure. During what is supposed to be a farewell statement, Takatsuki shocks Sasaki and the world by revealing that she is a ghoul.

The Review

This volume of Tokyo Ghoul: re is probably my favorite thus far. Not only do we get lots of action, we get a ton of plot progression. We’re finally beginning to see Sasaki accept the Kaneki part of his personality, albeit it very slowly. We’re also able to see the members of the Quinx Squad grow and branch out into their own stories. It will be interesting to learn why Mutsuki left the Quinx Squad and to see how Urie’s ambitions pan out.This volume also provides us with a much needed backstory on Eto Yoshimura. The first part of the Tokyo Ghoul series only reveals that Eto is the daughter of Yoshimura and Ukina and nothing else. It was really great to see some of her backstory, especially her jump into the literary world and her one-sided interactions with Yoshimura. I hope before this series is over we get to see the two interact.Fans looking to add Tokyo Ghoul: re Volume 6 to their collection can purchase it in stores or here from Viz Media.
