Tokyo Ghoul: re - Volume 3 (Review)

By: EyeSpyeAlex With the raid at the auction well underway, Tokyo Ghoul: re is proving to be just as action-packed as the original series! Need to catch up? Read my previous review here! The Quinx squad and the rest of the CCG fight various factions of Ghouls during the auction house raid. From the Clowns to the Aogiri Tree, to Ghouls in attendance, there are a lot of Ghouls for the Doves to take down, so the teams focus exclusively on eradicating Big Madam and the Nutcracker. Despite their focus and numbers, both Ghouls prove to be formidable foes and a challenge for the Quinx squad and the regular CCG agents. The situation only gets worse when Takizawa, who was supposed to have died during the battle of Anteiku, appears as a Ghoul. Takizawa wastes not time in proving his allegiance to the Ghouls, making quick work of killing CCG agents.Under the guise of escorting Mutsuki back to command, Urie leads them to an underground storage area where he suspects other Ghouls to be hiding, and stumbles upon Big Madam. Overpowered, Urie ends up nearly eaten by Big Madam, but uses his kagune to escape her mouth. Before Big Madam can attempt to make a meal out of the pair, Juzo’s squad shows up to take them down. Juzo - facing the Ghoul that raised him - kills Big Madam and earns his closure. While that is happening, the other members of the Quinx squad face down the Nutcracker. The Nutcracker proves to be a challenge for them as she possesses two kagunes to use. With quick thinking, they manage to use her trap kagune against her, and end their battle before anyone is seriously hurt.Meanwhile on the other side of the auction house, Sasaki battles against Takizawa. Just when it seems like all is lost and Sasaki will be defeated, Hinami jumps in to protect him. Insisting that Sasaki is really Ken Kaneki and that she owes him for saving her, Hinami prepares to face off against Takizawa. Gaining a second wind, Sasaki defeats Takizawa, impressing all there to witness it. After the battle, Sasaki makes a request to Arima that Hinami be released into his custody.Despite having a ton of action, this volume of Tokyo Ghoul: re dealt with a lot of emotional issues as well. It seems Haise Sasaki isn’t the only one who experiences a split in personality when using his kagune; we see Urie struggle with this as well. On top of that, Urie seems to be struggling with his feelings towards his team and his position on the team. Thankfully, Mutsuki is there to help him through this. Hopefully this moment of vulnerability allows Urie to be a more involved member of the Quinx squad.Having a pretty solid variety of conflicts to help move the plot along, Tokyo Ghoul: re is rounded out by awesome animation. Although the manga is exclusively drawn in black and white, the drawings manage to be brutal and visceral in the scenes they depict. The only downside to being drawn in black and white is that it can be a little hard to keep track of the characters represented.Fans looking forward to reading Tokyo Ghoul: re Volume 3 for themselves can do so here on the Viz website. Tokyo Ghoul: re Volume 4 will be available is currently available for preorder here and will be released on April 17, 2018.Note: Viz Media provided us with a digital copy of this manga in exchange for our honest review.
