Tokyo Ghoul: re - Episode 14 (Review)

I was eagerly awaiting this week’s latest episode of Tokyo Ghoul: re, and boy it did not disappoint! Need to catch up? Check out my previous review here!

The newest episode of Tokyo Ghoul: re picks up right where lasts week’s episode ends. Kaneki gets Hinami and prepares to escape, only to be blocked by Nimura. Kaneki and Hinami make quick work of Nimura before continuing on their way.

Meanwhile, Ayato squares off against Arima, who has shown up to stop the jail break. Just when it looks like Arima will kill Ayato, Renji and Touka show up and save him.  The three take on Arima in battle, but quickly realize he is too powerful. Just as he is about to kill Renji, Kaneki shows up and blocks the attack.

While Kaneki and Arima square off, Eto decides to join the fight. Taking on her monstrous One-Eyed Owl form, she wipes out Nimura’s team, saving him for last. He proves himself a formidable foe though and blindsides her with his kagune. The attack renders Eto defenseless, during which time Nimura gloats that his own kagune was once Rize’s. That’s gotta sting to hear.

The focus quickly shifts back to Kaneki and Arima’s fight. Arima brutally attacks Kaneki, causing him to retreat inside himself. There he sees Hide, who assures him that he can win the fight. Before he leaves, he tells Kaneki that he lied when he said he wanted to die a hero for someone. What he really meant, he explains, was that he wanted to live with Kaneki.

Kaneki’s conversation with Hide reinvigorates him and he finds the strength to continue fighting. He builds a trap for Arima with his kagune, attempting to trap his mentor. Arima easily gets through it, but doesn’t anticipate that Kaneki is one step ahead. Kaneki breaks Arima’s quinque, and then allows Arima to stab him. After finding out that Kaneki never had any interesting in beating him, Arima slits his own throat.

The Review

Umm, wow. I am honestly in shock at how this episode ends. This episode is truly one of the best in the series so far. I really like how they intersperse Renji’s connection to Touka and Ayato in between his battle with Arima. It was a great way to give him a motive for protecting them, and also explains how he’s known them for so long. It was also really great to see Hide again, even if he was just a hallucination.

The animation in this episode was also really on point. All of the colors are extremely vibrant, which highlights how cool the kagune are. The fight scenes are also really detailed and focused, which makes them much easier to enjoy.  All in all, this episode of Tokyo Ghoul: re is stellar and I highly recommend checking it out for yourself.
