Toaster Ball [Review]

Get bready to toast the competition! Toaster Ball is here, and it’s a very unique game that has a lot to offer for a concept so simple. One wouldn’t think a game about toasters mimicking pong would be just that. A game of pong with a toaster skin. But surprisingly, the bread and butter of this game is that you can play for a good thirty minutes and run into several mini games every round.

To keep things interesting, things start going a Rye when a cameo portal and cube from the game Portal by Valve appears. And you, along with the ball, start to relocate on the playing field. During the next round, the floor is lava, and everything is against the grain. Some matches you don't even have toast, the player is literally just using the toaster to jump and even dodge obstacles that may be in the way while you protect your goal. Everything goes by rather quickly, so when you encounter them again it’s not frustrating and it keeps you on your toes for what's coming next.

There’s a lot of thought put into the game. Just when I thought things couldn't get any butter, there’s a playable toaster bio screen that teaches you the background, name, and production year of each toaster along with their general goals, dreams, and aspirations. Pretty strange for a toaster, huh? Everything is written in a way that makes it feel like its an actual sentient toaster that exists. A small, fun detail is that you can actually turn the toasters around and look at the back. It’s such a small and seemingly useless feature, but it shows how much effort and detail that goes into the game.

Unexpectedly, the game can get competitive. Once you get a volley going, it gets more and more intense until you inevitably knock the ball into your own goal with your toast causing a lot of cheering from the other team. I can’t stop with the puns, the yeast I can do is give the game a Perfect Score

It’s a fun game to pick up with a group of four and I promise your friendships will be crumbling and you'll be baking someone's heart in no time! Toaster ball is available for Nintendo Switch and PC.
