TMNT x Naruto #2 [Advance Review]

Crossover comics are a tricky business, often walking a fine line between fan service and cohesive storytelling. With TMNT x Naruto, writer Caleb Goellner and artist Hendry Prasetya are delivering a mashup that surprises with its charm and creativity. While the second issue dials back on the action compared to the debut, it solidifies just how well these two beloved franchises can work together, even if some connections feel a bit contrived. For fans of either series, this is shaping up to be a delightful “dumb-fun” ride, and sometimes that is exactly what you need.

The second issue focuses heavily on relationships and backstory, diving deeper into the lore of the Hamato clan and its ties to ninja culture. Splinter takes the spotlight as he reveals key secrets that link the Turtles to Naruto’s world. These revelations are fascinating, though occasionally they feel a little forced to make the crossover narrative fit. Still, the connections are intriguing enough to keep fans hooked.

What stands out most in this issue is the interplay between Team 7 and the Turtles. Each of Kakashi’s students finds a kindred spirit among the Hamato brothers. Michelangelo and Naruto’s shared energy and optimism are a natural pairing, while Leonardo meets Sasuke’s calm and collected demeanor. Of course, we can’t forget about Sakura, who spends some time with Raphael as they let their fists do the talking on some sandbags. These interactions bring a sense of fun and heart to the story, making it easy to invest in the characters despite the somewhat light narrative stakes.

Caleb Goellner continues to impress with his ability to balance humor, tension, and nostalgia. His dialogue captures the voices of both the TMNT and Naruto characters with surprising authenticity, which is no small feat given the tonal differences between the two franchises. The humor lands well, particularly in the interactions between Michelangelo and Naruto, while the tension between Leonardo and Sasuke brings just the right amount of weight to the story.

The exposition-heavy moments, while informative, do slow the pacing at times. Goellner leans heavily on explaining the Hamato clan’s history and its ties to the shinobi world, which, while interesting, could have been streamlined to maintain momentum. That said, the narrative’s lighter tone feels intentional, embracing the crossover’s “dumb-fun” appeal in a way that works.

Hendry Prasetya’s artwork is a perfect complement to the story, blending the distinct visual styles of both franchises without losing their unique identities. His character designs stay true to their original forms while seamlessly integrating them into shared panels. The fight sequences, though less prominent in this issue, are still fluid and dynamic, showcasing Prasetya’s skill in choreographing action.

The quieter moments, such as discussions between Splinter and Team 7, shine through with expressive character work. Prasetya’s ability to capture subtle emotions in facial expressions adds depth to the interactions, grounding the fantastical story in relatable moments. However, as with the first issue, some background details in action-heavy scenes feel underdeveloped, which slightly detracts from the visual impact.

TMNT x Naruto Issue #2 may not deliver the high-octane action of its predecessor, but it more than makes up for it with strong character dynamics and a story that is easy to enjoy. Watching Team 7 and the Turtles form unlikely bonds is pure fun, and Goellner’s lighthearted approach makes this crossover a welcome escape from weightier narratives.

While some of the connections between the two worlds feel a bit forced, the charm and creativity behind the execution keep the story afloat. The book embraces its identity as a “dumb-fun” comic in the best way, delivering a pleasant surprise for fans of both franchises. If this crossover opens the door for more anime and comic book collaborations, it will have done its job well.

TMNT x Naruto Issue #2 is set to release on January 22 at local comic shops. Whether you are a fan of ninjas, turtles, or just an entertaining story, this is one you will not want to miss.

Fun, fast, and just the right amount of ridiculous.

Final Score: 8/10
