The Mobius Machine [Review]

I like to think of The Mobius Machine as a relaxed Metroid game that isn't intense or eerie. Mobius Machine is a side-scrolling Metroidvania game that pits you against gross and seemingly infected aliens. While it can get difficult and a bit more stressful at times, it is nowhere near as difficult as an actual Metroid game. And, this game encourages you to take your time. There is an achievement for speed-running the game, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it warrants a special ending like the game that inspired it. This game has a lot to look at. There are seven explorable sectors, all with separate maps to explore. The difference between sectors is the biomes and enemies you encounter. You can go in any order you’d like after defeating the first boss and getting a few essential items like a jet boost and climbing gear.

Because of Metroid's influence, there are going to be areas you cannot access until you get an item, but once you get the climbing gear, a lot of areas open up. It feels like most areas you can’t reach are mainly for blueprints. Which are indicated by a bright, glowing, blue star. If you find one, I highly recommend marking it on your map. I made the mistake of not thinking of this and had to search around to find them. Once collecting enough blueprints, you can unlock a new weapon at the workshop by buying it with scrap. Since it’s easy to get overwhelmed with enemies, these weapons are going to be useful.

While playing the game, I fell in love with it, and for a while, I was confused as to why. I was finally able to put it into words. I love exploring this game. It heavily encourages just running around and killing things. No matter where you go or how lost you get, you will be making progress by collecting scrap from enemies. And on the standard difficulty, death doesn’t matter too much. You will drop half of your scrap, but you can recollect it; there’s no time limit, and it won’t despawn. This just makes the experience better because I’m not stressing the entire game like with most Metroidvanias. Even getting lost doesn’t matter too much because going in every direction is helpful. At the end of most paths, there’s a wall to open or destroy that connects it with the rest of the map. Which only makes it easier to access later. That’s something I love about this game. The entire map is accessible. And it is a big map. You can find pathways connected to your main workshop throughout the map. And, each sector has a “Mobius Machine” that allows you to teleport to each section. It makes exploring a lot more rewarding.
