The final episode of season 4 ended with a time skip of six years, revealing Clarke was alive and well, and accompanied by a young girl named Madi. We had many questions about who she was, and where she came from, but now we have those answers!Episode 1 starts 42 days after the death wave, as Clarke finally escapes from the lab. She discovers the world is now a wasteland, and most remains of human civilization have been erased. After finding a car in the desert, she makes her way to the bunker that the others escaped to, only to discover that it’s buried under ruble. She attempts to get to the door, but Clarke only manages to get almost crushed as the remains of the polis tower continue to crumble.Clarke chooses to leave Polis and journeys across the wasteland. This section of the episode felt like it dragged quite a bit, but I suppose that does a good job showing how painful and boring 2 months alone on the planet could be. The main scene that was the most heart wrenching is when Clarke discovers some of Jasper’s old belongings and finally realizes that she’s alone, and is going to be for the next 5 years. After wandering through the wasteland and almost dying a few times, Clarke discovers a valley that was unaffected by the death wave. This valley is later referred to as “Eden”. She discovered a small village in the valley and finds out that unfortunately while the death wave skipped over the valley, the radiation did not. Clarke makes her home in the small village and soon discovers a small girl had survived, who turns out to be “The child from hell”. The young girl assumes the blonde to be one of the nightblood scouts, and lures her into a trap that injures her leg in a attempt to protect herself. The beginning of their relationship while odd, is fairly humorous. Not much of their dynamic is shown, but it does start with Clarke giving the young girl a drawing, which is absolutely adorable. It skips forward again to just before the previous time skip, and its revealed this girl is Madi if you hadn’t guessed already.Towards the end of the episode we get a glimpse of what Clarke’s friends have been doing for the last few years. Up on the Ark, Murphy has left the main group. I’m not quite sure why, they didn’t give much of an explanation, but I suppose it could be based on his character alone and how unreliable he is. Monty and Harper seem to be together now, as well as Bellamy and Echo. I don’t think putting everyone together was really necessary, you’d think people stuck in space would be more concerned about not dying. While it’s common for TV shows to have multiple couples, in this case it felt out of nowhere and forced. As Bellamy’s attempting to reassure Echo that Octavia will forgive her, we are shown a glimpse of the survivors in the bunker fighting violently as Octavia watches. In many of the previews she in referred to as the “red queen”. I doubt Octavia will be understanding of much given the darker turn of her character, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the outcome of that reunion.A mystery ship labeled “prisoner transport” lands and we get a glimpse of a few new characters as they exit the ship, but not much is known about them yet. The main female mentioned wanting to find out what happened to their planet while they were asleep, but we’re unsure as of yet how long they were asleep for. I’m guessing these are individuals from a pre-war prison system, and I’m interested to see how they react when they discover what the fate of society had been. It is also concerning to the other characters knowing that these are violent prisoners, evident as one of them attempts to injure Madi, but is killed by Clarke.I don’t normally like timelines that jump around, but this episode was written well and in a way that didn’t confuse the audience. Showing Clarke with Madi beforehand, made her whole survival montage a bit more interesting despite the slow and boring pacing. I’m very excited to see what happens between Space-Kru and the ship of prisoners in the next episode.Watch The 100 at 9/8c on The CWOr at http://www.cwtv.com/Check out our other TV Reviews
