Terra Memoria [Review]
Terra Memoria is a turn-based RPG that takes advantage of the new HD 2D art style first made popular by Octopath Traveler. What sets this game apart from other HD 2D games is its charm. For example, This game has a very cartoony text box and images for enemy weaknesses and status ailments. The sprite character models are incredibly detailed and the world is very beautiful and vibrant, allowing the sprites to really stand out and not distract or take away from the characters on screen. The way the turn based system works is rather interesting. The attacks you do impact how quickly you can attack again. Stronger moves make you miss many turns, so being strategic is completely necessary and needed. The game displays weaknesses and stregths next to the enemy’s name on the left as seen in the picture below. The information provided states what they are weak against and how much shield or defense they have. So if I have an attack that is super effective against two enemies but I lose a few turns, it can be worth it depending on the circumstances of the fight.
As enemies become closer to death, the game changes what they are weak to letting you use any attack to defeat them. Dealing damage makes the opponent lose some of their defenses or shields. If they are weak to an attack, they lose double that. Hopefully I’m explaining that correctly. The battles are like Pokemon mixed with Riviera: The Promised Land. The exploration in this game is very fun, with very little guidance but still having a sense of what is expected of you also, it worth noting, the world building its top tier. I found it very easy to dig into this immersive world. From the music to the classic RPG-style gameplay, it's oddly satisfying in a cozy-nostalgic way. The story is very light-hearted with good pacing and can be enjoyed by everyone. The character and art design is a huge plus for me. The characters and general aesthetic of this game are eye-catching.
While playing this game, friends and family who saw me playing, all stopped to ask what it was and took great interest in it, with even another member of the publication looking up the game and its characters and lore online just because she saw 5 minutes of gameplay. I highly recommend this game to classic RPG lovers and to anyone who's playing RPG games for the first time or even someone who doesn't like them. The cozy graphics, music, and very easy-to-grasp gameplay make for the perfect title to sit down and play. I also might add! This game is fantastic on the Steam deck and Nintendo Switch! This is an absolute must for fans of handheld gaming. Terra Memoria is available for Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, and the Xbox family of systems.
