Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter [Review]

Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter is the second installment in the series. Situated some years after the preceding events, familiarity with the initial storyline is not prerequisite for comprehension. This title is classified as a soulslike action platformer, wherein the challenge primarily stems from boss encounters, complemented by a diverse array of distinct enemies.

The narrative of Tails of Iron employs a folkloric approach, featuring a protagonist, Arlo, an heir to the throne of a kingdom inspired by Norwegian culture. Various other animal tribes and kingdoms exist within this world, some exhibiting amity, others engaged in conflict. The kingdom of Arlo is besieged by bats, necessitating reconstruction. Consequently, Arlo embarks upon a quest to distant territories seeking assistance. By purging these lands of monsters and interlopers, Arlo progressively expands and diversifies his kingdom.

The game's exploration mechanics bear resemblance to traditional Metroidvania structures, though a strict categorization is debatable. A grid-based map system, permitting traversal from right to left or vice versa, with branching pathways. Most areas are immediately accessible, eliminating the requirement for ability acquisition and backtracking, with exceptions for story-restricted zones.

Boss battles follow exploration and assistance to animal tribes. As a hunter, players track and engage these powerful foes. When the boss's health is reduced by about a third, it flees, and the player must give chase. Map markers and a fast travel system simplify pursuit, but only if the relevant areas have been explored beforehand. The game doesn't overly punish exploration, recognizing the demanding nature of boss encounters. An easy mode is available for those who prefer a less punishing experience, allowing them to focus on the story. Difficulty settings can be customized, so players can adjust the challenge of boss fights or side quests. Tails of Iron 2 Is a phenomenal game and should not be slept on.

Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter is available now for all Home gaming consoles and Steam.
