Starship Troopers Extermination [Review]
Have you ever watched the movie Starship Troopers? Well, if you enjoyed the movies and want more content, this game is a good successor and is highly recommended. Starship Troopers Extermination makes you feel like an actual character within the cinematic universe. Starship Troopers Extermination is an Early Access game developed by Strangelite and published by Empire Interactive and Destineer. The game is a first-person shooter where you take on the same bugs that plagued the main characters in the movie. Base building, extracting needed materials, and then escaping before being overrun is the name of the game.
Because the game is still in Early Access we did have a few issues. At one point during the game, my teammate’s controller just didn’t allow her to shoot. She could still move around and switch weapons but no longer point or shoot. The issue did ultimately fix itself just by nudging the mouse for a second but a mistake like this could be detrimental in a shooter game. Not only this, my game crashed several times. When my game crashed it also seemed to break the game for my teammates, as they couldn’t spawn into the game after this happened. We think the crashing was due to having too high of settings but it happened multiple times regardless of the settings or the PC’s power.
Despite the issues, the game feels good. I like the setting of the game and it really does feel like Starship Troopers, and I’ve watched the movie pretty recently so it’s been on my mind. At the moment there is only one planet but where you are located and where you are going changes each time. I would like to see other maps in the future, maybe one that takes place in the cave with the big mama Brain Bug like in the movie. The game doesn’t actually feature the Brain Bugs which is something else I’d really like to see. At the moment the bugs you face are mainly the grunts and a few of the massive bugs like Tiger Bugs.
The game has three classes; assault, heavy, and support. The assault class is probably the most similar to the soldiers in the movie while the heavy class allows you to put up barriers around you to prevent knockback from your gun. The support class obviously comes with healing items for you and your teammates but it also has a drone you can deploy that helps you out. You can level up the classes and get them perks, skills, or different guns that unlock with level-up. Building bases during downtime is key to staying alive and is the best way to ensure success on missions. Be warned, when escaping to the extraction point always make sure you are on the ship otherwise, you will be left behind also during the escape you can not spawn back if you die. The last thing that needs to be noted is the multiple game mods such as a hard mode that are locked behind what level you as a player are. It is worth noting this game is listed on Steam as unsupported by the Steam Deck. I personally had zero issues with the Steam Deck while testing this game out on it. This game also runs decently well on the ROG Ally as well. The game's road map has been updated which can be seen below.
