Spy X Family Episode 17 “CARRY OUT THE GRIFFIN PLAN / FULLMETAL LADY / OMELET RICE” Review
Episode Summary: Anya and the rest of her class have an arts and crafts lesson where Anya is put in the same group as Damian. Sylvia goes about an ordinary work day. We learn the secret source of Yuri's strength.
Episode 17 of Spy x Family showcases the series at its absolute best. It’s a legitimately funny episode, but with so different things going on beneath the surface that the show might as well be an onion.
The Becky-Anya-Dameon triangle continues to be forever entertaining. I’m not sure how the dynamic between the three never gets old for me. In fact, it continues to make me laugh.
This time around, it was a more melancholy feeling as a fair chunk of the episode cast Daemon in a more sympathetic light. Daemon’s father is absent from the boy’s life and the kid desperately craves acknowledgment. In fact, the only person who seems to pay Daemon much heed is his minions whom he bosses around, and Anya, who has her own ulterior motives. I’m feeling bad for the little brat.
Since we mentioned Anya, her characterization is still masterfully done. Anya may have superpowers, but she’s still just a young child who doesn’t understand the different facets of the world. She just kinda bumbles through life the way an actual kid might. Thanks to this, she may as well be one of the best characterizations of a child in anime, a media where kids aren’t portrayed realistically.
I can’t quite put my finger on it. Overall, the Anya-centric episodes hit me harder than the episodes featuring the adults. I find the adults fairly cartoony and exaggerated in places, but the kids’ centric stuff has an authenticity to it, even when it’s being absurd.
There are two other brief silly scenes at the end of the episode dedicated to Sylvia and Yuri, I didn’t find much of note about them.
Overall, I found this episode to be the best one so far!
