Spy x Family Episode 16 Review

Crunchyroll Episode Summary:

Why has Yor been coming home late every night, her hands covered in cuts? Why has Franky asked Loid to meet him under mysterious and urgent circumstances? These are two tales of misadventure while seeking happiness in Berlint.

Impressions and Review:

Spy x Family episode 16 continues with some more slice-of-life goodness! Episode 16 features two quaint stories focusing on Yor and Franky. Fifteen minutes of the episode focuses on Yor’s secret cooking class with her coworker (and potential friend in the making???) Camilla.

A character naturally bad at cooking and learning to cook is a common trope in anime. It's easy to make this predictable. Spy x Family takes a fresh approach to it with humor, heart, and excellent visual direction. Even with Yuri, my least favorite character, taking a prominent role in this story, I enjoyed this. It made me laugh a bit. Yor never change.

The other few minutes featured a short story with Franky, the informant, trying and failing to secure a date. It wasn’t as impactful as Yor’s story. Not that it was bad. Franky’s bit was a bittersweet glimpse into what it means to work in intelligence.

Was this episode the best Spy X Family offers for a slice of life? No. Middling for a Spy X Family episode is still pretty dang good. It won’t stick in my brain too much past today. That said, it was a fun diversion.
