Spy x Family Episode 14 Review

Crunchyroll Synopsis

Anya meets a mysterious dog who can see into the future. They were able to escape from the terrorists with the dog's help, but eventually, they fall back into the hands of the terrorists again. And then Yor shows up and attacks the enemy! Soon after, the dog sees into the future again. The vision Anya saw through the dog's mind was Loid unconscious and buried under the remains of a building that had been bombed. In order to stop this future from happening, Anya and the dog head to the place where the incident happens!

Thoughts

And so we pick up where episode 14 left off. This is a pretty solid entry in the storyline, though the content is mostly episodic and wraps up by the show's end.

The main conflict here is Loid’s impending death by a bomb. It’s up to Anya to save the day as she’s the only one who can see the dog’s vision. Problem is, she’s only six. She’s not the hero suited for the job, but dangit she’s the only one we got.

On the plus side, she is an absolute joy to watch muddle her way through the entire thing. She has no idea how to do anything to get from point a to point b.  Yet her problem-solving skills are actually fairly inventive and make sense for someone her age

I love how the dubbed “Mister Dog” is animated. Especially when Anya rides him through town. It's fluid and captures his fluffiness and range of personality. My favorite part is when they run by the shop full of TVs playing the news about the upcoming summit.

The real MVP of the episode is surprisingly the stoic no nonsense Loid. In the last five minutes, he’s shown dressed up as the Foreign Prime Minister and performs some very unprime minister-like jumps…much to Keith’s befuddlement.

Of interest, Loid’s agency captures and spends some time with the would-be-terrorists midway through the episode. The Handler gives a truly chilling speech and uh, she is one woman someone should absolutely not fuck around with, like, ever. I have a feeling she’s going to be an antagonist in the series when this is all said and done, but for now, I’m glad she’s on Loid’s side.

Season 1 leaned heavily on the humor inherent to the situation with the action being more pretty set pieces. With its first two episodes, Season 2, while still having that humor and subversion, is more focused on some really intense spy action that carries some surprising emotional heft behind it. It does it well, and I’ll be interested in seeing what direction this show chooses to take overall.
