Slow and Steady Wins The Race: Ashes of Creation Creative Director Publishes Lengthy Update

By: Mithrandiel

Since Ashes of Creation first came screaming into the MMO world via a massively popular Kickstarter campaign, we've followed the project with keen interest.

The game has come a long way since we first got our hands on it back at PAX West 2017. Staff from Intrepid Studio were even poking fun at the initial trailer at PAX West last year.

As the game's development marches on, Creative Director Steven Sharif posted a substantial update on the project yesterday. You can find the full statement here, but here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Intrepid staff is continuing to grow substantially. There were goals to double the production team, but they were unable to meet that goal by the end of 2018. They're still actively seeking passionate and talented game developers to bolster the team.
  • They're also moving into a new site in San Diego to accommodate their rapidly growing staff.
  • Clarification around Ashes of Creation: Apocalypse as a battle royale mode independent from the main project.
  • Progress made on ecommerce, forums, and customer service fronts.
  • Delay of Alpha One from Q2 to an indeterminate date. Delay is said to be measured in "months, not years".
  • No planned presence at PAX East, with a small showing at GDC for business-related purposes.
  • Content roadmap laying out next major developmental steps and notable upcoming streams.

With a growing hunger for a new MMO to disrupt the current landscape, fans of Ashes of Creation are no doubt chomping at the bit for more progress. However, as Mr. Sharif has stated numerous times, both in person and in yesterday's statement, he's more committed to taking the time to make sure it's done right, rather than rush out an incomplete product.

It's a noble mission, to be sure. The question remains, however: will fans be patient enough to see the project come to fruition? We can only hope.
