RipOut [Review]

We previously reviewed RipOut during it early access back in December of 2023. RipOut was made by Pet Project Games. I will start by saying this game still feels fantastic and is still very polished. RipOut has great graphics, and the art direction and atmosphere of this game are astonishing. My colleague and I were completely blown away by the level of detail and fluidity in this game. We played on the steam deck, and ROG Ally. On the Steam Deck specifically we turned on the gyroscope feature and it completely enhanced the experience. Also, This game looks magnificent on the Steam Deck OLED and found out the Steam Deck OLED actually used ray tracing.

This game is pretty difficult, and whether you are playing PC, Steam Deck or ROG Ally, you will need to RipOut of your comfort zone and explore an eerie, cold, and dark sci-fi world. This game is a Cooperative PVE game. For this review we just had a team of 2. In this game you explore abandoned ships and complete objectives, once completed you are always directed to go back to your ship and leave. Returning to your ship after completing tasks can be difficult, as your path is always riddled with flashy Dead Space looking human-esc creatures. Some creatures even remind me of monsters from Resident Evil.

Anyone looking for their Xenomorph Gun? Don’t worry, the creature is too busy crawling around attacking freaky monsters. In RipOut the player doesn’t have just a normal gun, they have an alien pet that inhabits the shell of a gun. What I really like is that the pet isn’t just some useless gimmick, this Xenomorph looking creature can also be sent to attack these monsters, and some of them have things your pet can bring back to you. The pet Rips Out things like shields, a shoulder missile that looks like it came straight out of Iron Man’s arsenal, and even a tentacle finger thing that heals you. All these items may be temporary, but they are incredibly useful in a difficult game like this one. A strange feature my colleague liked was being able to pet the Creature, even an ugly Xeonomprohe gun creature thing deserves all of the pets!  Yes you read that correctly-you can pet the gun, it even looks like it’s purring at the affection!

This game has a lot of roguelike elements, one in particular is being able to get mid stage upgrades that go away after leaving the stage. For example, you can make your sidearm stronger anytime you send your pet to get a kill. This is helpful because any time your pet is deployed, you no longer have use of your man gun, since your pet is pretty much what activates it. This game does have the regular modern day game mechanics like weapon classes and weapon customization to make the games easier or change the pace of gameplay. The one personal gripe I have is that you have to click a button to collect items, which wouldn’t usually be a problem, but I get distracted by items and want to pick them up as soon as possible rather than waiting. This usually leaves me open for enemy attacks. Regardless of this very small personal problem, this game was very enjoyable and impressive.

As of 5/28/2024, Rip Out has been released from Early Access and is now a full-fledged game! The problem is that not much has changed. The full release adds an objective called Kill Zone. “My personal favorite mode in the game,” where players are tasked with killing a specified number of enemies to complete the stage, . Cloud saves have been added. Players can create up to five characters, and during this, you can choose to skip tutorials. Obviously, the game has gotten a new balance update as well. And many quality live updates as far as the fog is concerned, and other smaller things that have been mentioned by myself in the last Early Access review. If players are looking for anything new in this full release, unfortunately, you are not going to see any big changes. One huge letdown is the final chapter from the roadmap isn’t in the game yet. Just tweaks here and there. Honestly, this game is still great, and any new features or quality-of-life fixes are fine with me. I still highly recommend this game.
