PULL! New Comic Reviews [Week of 11/23]

By: Mithrandiel

It may be Thanksgiving tomorrow, but today is new comic book day! So, I wanted to spotlight some new releases (and one slightly older release)!

Avengers #62

This is the one that I’m a bit behind on…but better late than never, right? The sorcerer supreme takes center stage in this issue, but it’s not who you think! Agamotto squares off against Mephisto, but things don’t end the way they typically do. While the powerful sorcerer is used to victory over the devil-like entity, Mephisto’s recent increase in strength results in his victory, and the rest of the issue documents him gathering a handful of formidable allies to meet up with the modern-day Avengers. Some great action and continuing ramp up to further Mephisto shenanigans!

Defenders Beyond #5

Al Ewing’s cosmic adventure with the Defenders comes to a conclusion with this great issue. The Defenders come face to face with the big cheese themselves: The One Above All! With the help of, well, God, they get a sneak peek at what threatens Eternity, laying the groundwork for a potentially universe-ending threat. Tradd Moore’s psychedelic art and Ewing’s writing has helped to craft a great installment in the Defenders library. Looking forward to seeing some more of one of my favorites in a future installment: The Silver Surfer!

Doctor Strange - Fall Sunrise #1

As a huge Doctor Strange fan, I was thrilled to hear about Tradd Moore taking on everyone’s favorite Sorcerer Supreme. The artwork is surreal and gorgeous, and the narrative is promising as well, though a bit convoluted in the early pages. Really enjoyed Daniel Warren Johnson’s cover for this week’s issue as well.

Excited to see more Doctor Strange in the coming weeks!

Eight Billion Genies #6

Charles Soule definitely had an innovative idea in mind when he first put Eight Billion Genies to the page. This issue scaled back and tracks some of our central characters over an eight year span, documenting developments in “Fun City”, with particular attention paid to Brian, Alex and Daisy’s attempts to refine their band and earn a spot in the legendary haven. As always, Soule deals out equal parts drama and humor, with some remaining mystery and intrigue occurring just off-page. With only two issues left, there’s no way I’m getting off this train now! Great read!

The Human Target #9

Tom King continues to deliver in a big way with The Human Target, as the final issues are just around the corner. Christopher Chance is used to getting ahead of his enemies, often thinking a step (or three) ahead. So what’s got him so anxious in this issue? Oh right… Batman.

Another fantastic entry in the series. If you haven’t been keeping up with it, definitely play some catch up! You can find the first 6 issues collected in this set.

Vanish #3

Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s independent project continues to ooze cool as the 3rd issue landed this week. As Oliver wages war on two more members of The Prestige, we see the former hero begin to lose to a darker side of himself. Very reminiscent of Spawn, with more magical elements mixed in. A fun one to have in my pull, and a great read!

If you’re interested in more comic book content, there’s plenty to enjoy from our friends at Comic Book Keepers - Chris and Lance dive into comic book characters, their history, and their influence on popular culture every Wednesday! You might even hear yours truly once in a while…make sure to check it out!

Until next time!
