PULL! Mithrandiel's Comic Reads - Week of 9/15

Happy Tuesday, comic geeks! A bit slow on the upload this time around, but I did want to go over the handful of books I picked up last week. Let's dive in!

Eternals - Thanos Rises #1 [Kieron Gillen]

With The Eternals film just around the corner, more attention and buzz is swirling around the godlike heroes who have been put on Earth to protect against a growing threat of Deviants - their longtime enemies. Of course, Thanos has already had his share of the spotlight within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this week's issue from Kieron Gillen provides some haunting context to the origins of the highly popular, cosmic supervillain. There is some tremendous writing in here, as Gillen beautifully captures the tensions that simmer and sometimes explode within The Eternals, and the horrifying result of one Eternal's boundless curiosity. Weaver's art is superb in this issue as well.

In short, it's a fantastic issue featuring a well-known figure, and definitely deserves a read. Grab this issue! 10/10

The Trial Of Magneto #2 [Leah Williams]

The trial continues! As the Avengers make their way to Krakoa to mourn the loss of The Scarlet Witch, Xavier attempts to learn more of Magneto's motivations around the apparent murder. But, something is wrong with the Scarlet Witch's body, and Magneto finds himself compelled to battle against the Avengers to protect whatever secret the body holds!

This run continues to impress - with fantastic art that really captures the nuance of various characters in different stages of grief and anger, as well as the high-octane confrontation in the mid to later portion of the issue, I'm invested in how this arc is going to expand in the next few issues, especially with its confusing cliffhanger ending! 9/10

Time Before Time #5 [Rory McConville/Declan Shalvey]

Our sci-fi/gangster comic grows more wobbley with the manipulation and downright disrespect of time in the latest issue. After being sent through a number of centuries in the time-traveling equivalent of an olive-green jalopy, Tatsuo encounters an unexpected former ally. After another round of ridiculous twists and high-stakes drama, involvement with the Syndicate reaches a whole new level. The fast-paced nature of the series, combined with its engrossing aesthetic and strong writing, keeps Time before Time firmly on my pull list. 9/10

The Mighty Valkyries #5 [Jason Aaron]

Leave it to Jason Aaron to take proper care of anything within the realm of Thor, the Valkyries, and the broader Norse Mythology within Marvel. This concluding issue of his Mighty Valkyries run is stunning, with an impressive final battle fitting of a much longer arc. Gronbekk's art is superb, and Aaron's writing captures equal parts otherworldly wisdom and practical, What the hell just happened? moments. I will say I was interested when the series began, but now that it's ended I'm very impressed with the work Aaron has done. Looking forward to a continuation of this story, in whatever format I can get it! 9/10
