PULL! Mithrandiel's Comic Reads 8/4/21

By: Mithrandiel

Hey everyone! Back from a bit of a hiatus to share some of my more recent comic reads! Take a look, and maybe you'll be adding some books to your weekly pull list!

Immortal Hulk # 49 [Al Ewing]

Mr. Ewing's only got one issue left of his phenomenal Hulk run, which I believe stands shoulder to shoulder with Chip Zdarsky's Daredevil as one of the best in the last 5 years of major Marvel series. This issue moves very quickly through a series of key plot points that otherwise would have covered 3-4 issues, but instead are expedited for the sake of, what I hope will be, a clean conclusion as the Hulk is handed off to Donny Cates. Despite the extensive exposition, it still lands well, and I'm excited to see how The Immortal Hulk wraps up in just a few short weeks. 8/10

Deadpool: Black, White & Blood #1 [Tom Taylor, Ed Brisson, James Stokoe]

An issue with Deadpool is guaranteed* to be a great time, and this issue is no exception, From the opening panels you can't help but grin as the self-aware, chaotic force of nature that is Deadpool slashes and shoots his way through a handful of self-contained narratives, each penned by talented writers who are able to maintain the core personality of Deadpool without stepping on each other's toes.

The more you knowwwww~

There will be further issues, so make sure that you pick this one up and add it to your pull in the coming weeks. It's sure to be a great mid-week pick-me-up! 9/10

*not always guaranteed

The Good Asian #4 [Pornsak Pichetshote]

Hopefully this series isn't flying under your radar - particularly for fans of Infidel, who no doubt rushed to pick up this series when they saw the acclaimed writer attached to it. The aesthetic continues to impress, and the plot takes an enthralling turn in the closing pages, leaving me hungry for issue 5, which will be here in early September! With impressive art, sharp writing and superb pacing, you should be reading this series! 9/10

Basilisk #3 [Cullen Bunn]

This series is so good! Really enjoying the supernatural powers of the "gods" that butchered our protagonists family. Cullen Bunn does a particularly good job with the dialogue, really nailing the strain between Regan and Hannah as the former struggles with confronting her kin, and the latter still seems either unaware or unconcerned with just how out of her league she is in trying to combat them. A must read with every new issue. 10/10

Commanders in Crisis #11 [Steve Orlando]

This sprawling series is nearing its conclusion as Prizefighter and his colleagues push back against the forces of evil that seek to accelerate the end of all things in the form of cosmic sepsis! While our heroes seem to be turning the tide, nothing is guaranteed as we hurtle towards the final issue next month. If you haven't had a chance to read Commanders in Crisis yet, I'd highly recommend it! Orlando deftly creates a multiverse-spanning event from scratch, and brings you along for the ride! 8/10

The Me You Love In The Dark #1 [Skottie Young]

Artistic inspiration can be hard to find, so why not plant yourself inside of a spooky house and hope that whatever spirits reside within help spark some creative juices? Barista-turned-artist Ro is hoping for exactly that, but perhaps gets a bit more than she bargained for when a spirit begins to speak to her in earnest. With Skottie's flair for storytelling combined with Jorge Corona's distinctive artistic style, Image has definitely got another strong entry here! Definitely recommend picking it up if you can! 9/10

Porcelain #1 [Maria Llovet]

Weird, and not in a good way. While the art is interesting, there's very sparse dialogue and not much being done to pull readers into the world. It's leaning on the inherent creepiness of dolls without providing much depth to its characters. The cover caught my eye, but I don't think I'll be reading any more... 5/10
