PAX West Spotlight: Worldless

By: Mithrandiel

What seems like an eternity ago now, back in the year 2018 I recall seeing a striking clip of a game in progress with a celestial-like entity squaring up for combat. I discovered some important information about the game, and even had a brief chat with Joel Roset, the creator of Worldless. Since it’s been over 4 years since our last conversation, and I wasn’t sure the direction that Worldless had gone in the years since - imagine my surprise when I saw the booth set up at PAX West 2022, ready to go!

Per the Steam description: Worldless is set at a time where the rules of existence remain undefined. Players will explore a shapeless world of two realms, one filled with entities forming their growth and understanding, the other is the place they aspire to. This inevitably thrusts them into a war against polarities in a battle for transcendence.

While the narrative sounds a bit intangible and aloof, I assure you the combat helps to ground things pretty quickly. Featuring an interesting turn-based approach with action elements, attacks, magic and skillful blocks and parries are all at your disposal as you battle similar creatures from these undefined spaces.

The exploration aspects and aesthetic reminds me of PixelJunk’s Eden - with platforms to activate and unlock and a generally a visually striking world to explore. The combat maintains a good balance between action and strategy as well. After battling certain enemies to a breaking point, you can trigger a quick time event, of sorts, to steal a relevant power from them.

Overall, this game appears to be a great one to watch for most gamers - you can check out the main page and wishlist it on Steam here.
