PAX West Spotlight: My Brother Rabbit

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]By: RaeThe Indie booths at PAX definitely set the bar high, but I knew I’d found something special when I arrived at Artifex Mundi. Since I was early and people were still playing, I had a chance to talk to Tomasz – a producer at Artifex – while I was waiting and hear a little more about their upcoming game, My Brother Rabbit.My Brother Rabbit brings the player into a beautiful, rather surreal world, built on the perception of two children. When a young girl becomes very ill, she and her brother face the reality of the situation with their imaginations, creating a beautiful landscape for the player to adventure and explore. The parents are only present in subtle ways – mom and dad’s respective workshops were an explorable area in the start of the demo, but I was told that they never actually appear in the story.It’s a point-and-click puzzle/adventure game, in which nearly everything is interactive in some way. Even if an item isn’t usable yet, it might make noise, or perhaps can be moved to allow access to another item. Players are given a little bit of a hint at what they need to do, and can explore their surroundings to uncover information, find helpful items, or move forward. I loved the exploration aspect, which lets the player truly get immersed in the world and rewards ruffling through every cupboard and cabinet.Aside from the stunning artwork, my favourite aspect of the game was probably that the developers purposely avoided putting in a lot of words and dialogue. A key idea when creating the game was accessibility – that anyone, anywhere, could understand how to play and experience the world of My Brother Rabbit without language getting in the way. The end result is both charming and immersive, allowing players not only to truly engage, but also giving plenty of attention to both gorgeous artwork and music.There are honestly no words for how beautiful this one was, but fortunately there are pictures:[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type="nivo" interval="3" images="54375,54378,54379,54381" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]The lead designer of the game, Daniel, was inspired by the way children see the world, and create explanations for the things around them. It’s a lovely inspiration, and the team does an amazing job pulling it off.
