PAX Spotlight: Mutazione
By Rae
Welcome to Mutazione. Long ago, a meteor hit – killing nearlyeveryone and causing those left behind to begin mutating. Left behind by theworld, the people of Mutazione have developed their own community in isolation.
Fast-forward to the present. Over a hundred years have goneby since the tragic Moon Dragon meteor incident, but the rumours about mutantson the island still linger. Despite the stigma and the stories, 15-year old Kaiis sent to Mutazione to tend to her ailing grandfather. But what lurks under thesurface of this seemingly friendly community? Every small town has secret andgossips. What has happened here? Why does Kai keep having strange, creepydreams?
Sadly, I showed up to my appointment late and ended uphaving to cut off my demo a little early, but what I did see looked reallyinteresting so far. Mutazione has a rather unique style that makes it seem alittle more storybook-like than your average adventure game. It also takesadvantage of its story’s room for creativity – the characters of Mutazione areunique and varied, with all sorts of colours and designs to see. It was quitelovely to look at, and exploring the environment was lovely – especially whenit came to the plants and trees surrounding the area.
The piece of gameplay that the demo showed off most is garden-growing.By learning songs and planting seeds, Kai can create a special garden. My favouritepart of this was that each plant has a different instrumental sound, so you cancreate your own soundscape to relax in.
It’s hard to say much about Mutazione’s story yet, but I hope it will be really interesting. I loved the characters I met in the demo and the dialogues with them. At least one character seems to have a tragic backstory, and Im sure there are plenty more waiting for us. I’m curious to uncover more secrets of Mutazione and learn more about the community there.
