PAX East Spotlight - Vambrace - Cold Soul

Vambrace - Cold Soul is a turn-based RPG with roguelike elements. Similar in look to Darkest Dungeon, the game takes place across seven chapters, each chapter featuring a dungeon delving expedition.

Players can assemble a party of adventurers from 10 different classes, each with different active and passive skills. The game features a crafting system, so players can create new new equipment from the spoils of victory. However, since we're in rougelike territory, death is permanent. Do your best to make sure you don't lose that party member you invested so much time and resources into.

Combat is turned based, and the turn order is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Characters have a variety of attacks at their disposal, including powerful special actions, which deplete a meter. Attacking and using other actions charges the meter: your party members effectively have their own super meters, which adds a unique element to combat.

Traveling the city presents the party with different events: enemy encounters, treasure, etc. During the demo, I stumbled into a trap, damaging a party member. Had I been wise, I would have placed a party member with a high Awareness stat at the the front of the formation, so she could spot the trap.

Simply put, the art in the game is stunning. The combination of a grim, hostile, environment with vibrant colors is a beauty. Somehow these two extremes work well together.

I was able to speak to Tristian, one of the developers, about the game. Checkout our interview below, and stay up today by visiting Devespresso Games's website.
