PAX East Spotlight: Summoners Fate
By Peeziest
Summoners Fate is a top-down turn-based strategy game with deck building elements. In short, you pick a summoner and build a deck of cards. Each summoner has different themes available to them, dictating the type of cards that go into their deck (nature, undead, fire, etc).
Each turn, you can move your units and attack something. You can strike an opponent from the back, denying your target a chance to retaliate. Positioning is doubly important, as units can not move through others, even friendly units. Thus, having a large number of units on the board could be detrimental, as you'll likely have units that are unable to participate in combat, caught in a metaphorical traffic jam.
As I progressed through the demo, I found new cards to add to my deck. Each card has a mana cost associated with it, and you can have three cards in your hand (on the left hand side) at a time. You can have up to five mana total, and gain three each turn. Once a card is used, it goes off to the discard pile.
The summoner I played with during the demo had a nature theme, summoning bears, wolfs and squirrels to her side. Actually, squirrels played a large role in her deck, which included cards that doubled their numbers and made them stronger. I even found a replacement for my summoner's melee weapon, which launched squirrels as a projectile. Launching squirrels was surprisingly effective, as it created a unit adjacent to the enemy. Increasing the number of units on my side.
The demo played out as a series of sequential maps, which demonstrated the solo content in Summoners Fate. The developers at D20 Studios are also implementing multiplayer, where your goal is to defeating the opposing player's summoner.
Summoners Fate is coming PC, MAC, Android, and iOS. Check out their website for more details.
