Overlord II - Episode 4 (Review)

He's Alive!

Rororo! Lo and behold our favorite snake hydra creature survived the battle! I guess the Lizard Men aren’t as cruel as I made them out to be. Other than that good news there was plenty of other good things about this episode. The proper return of Ains was great to see, finally, he’s back in full form. Last weeks brief appearance doesn’t count, this was finally an episode centered around him. With Ains return brings many memorable scenes. One, in particular, was exactly what I was thinking when he retreated to his bedroom. After speaking to his guardians it’s proven that there is room for all of them to grow. Which means change. This also means that the loyalty of his guardians is not guaranteed. My thought was exactly this when his guardians were gathered around praising him after he teleported. How long will this last? Will there come a day when some of his loyal subjects turn on him? Will this series end someday with him having to fight all of his former subjects?

Ains Ooal Gown In Full Form

One of my favorite things about the Ains character is how an episode feels when he plays a large role in it. He brings the events and everything going forward to light. That and it gives a human emotion to it all. He is excellent as always playing the confident strong leader. That’s why it is refreshing to see him when he’s alone or hear the dialogue in his head. When he is truly honest with himself and it’s a reminder of how most of us would probably act in that situation and role. The Lizard Men scenes being mixed in with Ains and the guardians make for a much smoother pace. There wasn’t any fighting, but the display of power and the random undead like staircase was entertaining all on its own. This episode all around was entertaining and solid. Finally, a return to form from season one. There was only one thing I took issue with. At the end, before the screen went black, there was a heartfelt moment. Honestly, this whole four hours to live thing was the first time I felt like I cared about these characters. It was ruined with the last line from Crusch to Zaryusu. Impregnate me! Why? Just why? At least we are hopefully at an end to terrible episodes.
