Deltarune’s release was a mysterious one, appearing on a website with little information – just a file download and a warning. Three years later, the announcement of Deltarune’s second chapter was almost as much of a surprise, with an official announcement merely days before its release. On Friday, the second chapter of this Undertale follow-up from Toy Fox was released on Steam. Like it’s predecessor, chapter two is free, though we can expect the next chapters (which are currently in production!) to be paid.

For players who have completed chapter one, the data has been saved and they can pick up right where they left off, in Kris’s bedroom. The chapter starts off heading to school, where Susie and Kris decide it’s time to head back to the Dark World and see what’s going on – both are eager for adventure, but what happens when others start to get pulled in too, and it turns out there are other worlds waiting behind new doorways?

While I haven’t finished the chapter yet, so far the experience has been a good one. Players are now able to recruit enemies for their city by sparing them (or take away their ability to recruit them by defeating them), giving a little more depth to mercy versus killing. Otherwise, the gameplay, dialogue, and music all are all in line with the Undertale and Deltarune experience – a little challenging, a lot silly, and plenty of bangers to enjoy as you experience it all.

If you haven’t played Undertale but have been curious, chapter one of Deltarune actually isn’t a bad way to gauge how you feel about the gameplay and the story experience – checking out Deltarune won’t give you much in the way of spoilers for Undertale, but it will let you get a feel for the battles, music, and characters. Overall, it’s a fun experience so far that’s a great continuation for those who finished Undertale and wanted to see more – there’s a lot left to uncover, but I’m enjoying every step of the way.

We’ll be back when we finish chapter 2 – and when the game continues!
