Once Upon A Deadpool (Movie Review)

Deadpool returns to the big screen for a limited time with a PG-13 rating. The alternative version of Deadpool 2 will run in theaters from December 12th-24th. If you're thinking, "this is just a cash grab," you are absolutely right! One dollar for every ticket sold in the United States will be donated to the Fudge Cancer organization. Proceeds will help fund prevention, early detection and social-emotional support of those affected by cancer.

In addition to supporting a great cause, many believe the heavily censored Deadpool was a trial run for a PG-13 version of the character as Disney's finalized acquisition of the Fox property draws closer.

Review

Once Upon A Deadpool is a heavily censored and streamlined version of Deadpool 2. The Princess Bride element with Fred Savage is absolutely brilliant and is possibly the most Deadpool thing ever put on film. Fred and Deadpool's banter is hilarious. Fans of The Princess Bride will thoroughly enjoy these scenes.  If you haven't seen The Princess Bride, what is wrong with you?! Go watch it now so you can understand why these Deadpool scenes are so amazing! The film is rampant with alternative scenes and dialogue. While the film is relatively the same as Deadpool 2, fans of the franchise will enjoy the variations.

While I personally enjoyed Once Upon A Deadpool, there are a number of issues with the film. The inclusion of new scenes and editing for a family friendly rating results in a rushed and often choppy story. The removal of blood and gore is painfully apparent. The action sequences feel incomplete without Deadpool's extreme violence. While Deadpool 2 is a superior film, Once Upon A Deadpool moves quickly and is supercharged for laughs. While the emotional moments don't quite hit as hard as the original cut, Once Upon A Deadpool is a lot of fun for a great cause.
