Necrophosis Demo Impressions
Demo for first-person horror adventure inspired by artist Zdzislaw Beksinski is wonderfully macabre.
Dragonis Games’ Necrophosis demo recently became available. The game is inspired by the work of dystophian surrealist Zdzislaw Beksinski, an artist whose work should be familiar to players who have enjoyed games such as Scorn or The Medium. The game doesn’t yet have a release date, so I was very excited to have a chance to spend a little bit of time with the game.
Necrophosis has you exploring a desolate world in the first person. You’ll pick up and use items as is standard in adventure games, here including things like ribcages, brains, or eyeballs. Your character has the ability to grab its brain and place it in mecha-organic machines to control them, which is a neat mechanic.
I got a little bit impatient with some of the unskippable dialogue, presented as poems recited by characters. I hope that in the final release we have the ability to read and speed through some of this.
The star of the show here is the Unreal 5 engine visuals. The game’s creepy graphics are rendered in loving detail, making the dead world of Necrophosis feel alive. Even if the pace feels a little bit too deliberately slow, I’ll be playing this game just to experience and explore its gorgeously spooky setting.
From the game’s description:
Billions of years after the universe met its demise, you awaken in a realm where death reigns supreme but even death may die.
Necrophosis, the curse that plagues this world, inflicts decay upon everything it touches. Here, amidst a landscape crafted with meticulous care, dread and decay permeate every corner. The characters of this world, infected by the curse, embody the very essence of decay.
With every turn you take and every sigh that escapes your lips, you bear witness to the relentless touch of decay. Necrophosis weaves its grim tapestry, enveloping you in a haunting journey through a macabre world where death is not an end, but a pervasive reality.
I played the demo on my Steam Deck, where it ran at around 30fps on default settings, though I have CryoUtilities installed to tweak performance.
