My Hero Academia Season 2 Episode 6 (Review)

By: AlanV[yasr_multiset setid=11]Episode six takes a break from the action of the sports festival. It uses this intermission to reveal information about one of Deku’s rivals, throw in some fan service and setup the final round of the tournament. The best part of the episode is the beginning where we learn more about Todoroki. It’s revealed that as the world came to grips with people having quirks that marriages were arranged to ensure the birth of strong offspring. Todoroki is a product of this kind of marriage, and his upbringing is rough because of it.His dad is the hero Endeavor, a man who is consumed by his desire to be the best. However, he could never surpass All Might as the number one hero. This leads to him piling the pressure on Todoroki to become as strong as possible to assume the position he never could. Obviously, this leads to an unhealthy relationship between father and son. It’s also the reason Todoroki refuses to use the quirk he inherited from his old man.The mood is lightened up a bit when the sports festival kicks back into gear. Kaminari and Mineta let their pervy personalities come to the front when they trick the girls of Class 1-A into wearing cheerleading outfits. It’s an enjoyable comical moment without letting the fan service get overwhelming.Things really start to slow down when the students are asked to participate in a random set of events that have no bearing on the proceedings. The episode’s pacing is killed with this section, and it would have been better off without it. This bit of filler takes it to just about the end, leaving little time to show any of the first fight between Deku and his opponent. The sixth episode starts off strong, and manages to deliver some funny moments. It’s just a shame that it’s bogged down with unnecessary side events. It’s made to look a bit worse after how amazing the last episode was.
