Micegard [Review]

Micegard is a slightly strategic adventure game about Viking mice fighting through a war against toads. It was developed by Game Dynasty and Aivictory. Micegard is a short game that tells the story of war and betrayal, taking place in an old world. If you’d like, you can decide to respect or ignore the gods. The choices come with different benefits. The gameplay is interesting and slightly reminiscent of Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventure. You have a team of mice that you can command into three different positions: an attack position where you shoot arrows, a defense position, which is a circle where every mouse has their sword out, and a searching position where the mice will split up and gather materials and/or attack enemies. The materials are for rebuilding the mice village after it was burned down. I will say that while the game is short, there aren't enough buildings to repair for the amount of materials you’ll get throughout the entire game.

I managed to fix every house by the sixth level in the game. The buildings also give upgrades, and honestly, with how difficult this game is, it could benefit from more upgrades. Micegard is a fairly difficult game. The games length clocking in at about 1 - 2 hours is stretched out by forcing players to replay multiple levels. The game does get a bit frustrating at parts, especially when you die at the end of a level and have to completely redo it. This style of gameplay can get old fairly quickly, especially when playing by yourself as opposed to the multiplayer that comes with Four Swords Adventure. During my playthrough of Micegard, towards the end it became pretty boring, but luckily the game is short and sweet; it doesn’t overstay its welcome. I’ll be scoring Micegard with 6/10; it isn’t a game I personally want to sit down and play for too long, but the game style also isn’t entirely for me. The game is currently available on Steam and Nintendo Switch.
