Lunar Lodge #1 [Review]
Lunar Lodge, a new miniseries from Dark Horse by writer Tyler Marceca and artist Mirko Colak, with colors by Bryan Valenza, opens on a grizzly scene of a woman waking up naked in an unknown location, with dismembered bodies and gore all around her. She spits out blood. We hear a howl from off-page. This can only mean one thing—which I won’t spoil here.
So, I was immediately on board.
After that, we’re dropped into a mystery. Veterinarian Rob Moreland goes home after a rough day and answers a phone call—the Lunar Lodge in Montana, asking to confirm his wife Fiona’s reservation. The only problem is that she told Rob that she was going to stay at a Marriott in Arizona. This sends Rob on an investigation as he follows his wife, who is obviously hiding a secret. Meanwhile, we also meet other shady characters that seem to know more than they let on, including the mysterious woman in the opening pages.
I really love how art-forward this book is. There’s very little in the way of exposition. We get to see how characters feel and action unfold with the sparse writing. The book combines two of my favorite things: detective noir and horror; the art’s inky shadows really sell that mood.
While on the surface what kind of horror we’re facing and what’s going on seems clear to me, Lunar Lodge is intriguing enough to where I think it may go in an unexpected direction with its compelling mystery. I’m looking forward to reading more! If you like detective stories and horror, give this book a shot.
