Let’s! Revolution! [Review]
Let’s! Revolution! is an ingenious roguelite puzzler inspired by Minesweeper.
BUCK’s Let’s! Revolution! is a game about saving the land of Beebom from the greedy King. You play as one of three rebels—each with two available classes—out to kick the King’s butt. You must chase him across the land, fighting his lackeys on the way. In order to find him in each map, you’ve got to use your logic skills to strategically search the level. It’s a fun and challenging, albeit short, game.
Each level starts as a grid of mostly hidden tiles. There are three types of tiles: roads, dead ends, and neutral. You start near one of the corners, and uncover a tile each turn by moving to it. Uncovered neutral tiles will have a number that corresponds to how many road tiles neighbor it; this is useful info because the King is always hiding on a road. However, all the enemies are on roads as well. You must use logic to deduce which tiles are roads just like you would to find mines in Minesweeper.
The game is turn based, with everything else taking its turn after you. Enemies won’t attack immediately unless you walk into them while they’re hidden; they’ll attack after a set number of turns. The problem is, enemies can hit you regardless of where they are in the level, so you need to be careful about how many you reveal at a time.
How you explore the map and interact with enemies changes completely based on the class you choose. Some classes focus on combat while others should avoid combat entirely to survive. Some classes get benefits from revealing as many tiles as possible, while others get bonuses from only revealing what’s necessary. Characters get a default set of abilities based on their class, and you can upgrade them or acquire more by finding shops within levels. Abilities consume energy and each class regains it in its own way, which will also inform your strategy and decisions.
Some classes are more difficult that others to use. Sometimes you’ll just have bad luck or make a bad decision that will unravel your run. Still, in my time with the game, I was able to complete runs with every class in multiple levels of difficulty and earn plenty of points to unlock new items and abilities to populate the game.
I love the gameplay and concept, but the most striking thing about Let’s! Revolution! is the gorgeous art and animation. The style is flat and cartoonish, full of style and personality. I loved the character designs for both the heroes and the enemies. It looks like it was plucked from a show or movie. Visually, the game does everything right. Every action is accompanied by lushly animated characters and effects.
Let’s! Revolution! is fun and has a great hook, but it’s short and I wish BUCK pushed their winning concept further. There was potential here to introduce more gameplay ideas aside from its classes, abilities, and enemies, to surprise players with new spins on the game’s formula rather than simply increasing difficulty. The game shows us everything it has too quickly after it’s given us its compelling ruleset and beautiful world full of possibility.
Let’s! Revoluton! is available now on PC (Steam), Xbox One / Series X|S, PlayStation 4 / 5, and Nintendo Switch.
