Nintendo announced today that a live-action film of The Legend of Zelda is in development! Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda) will produce along with Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Iron Man) under Nintendo and Arad Productions. The movie will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures, with a majority stake from Nintendo. Alan Ball, director of the Maze Runner films and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, will direct. No release date has been announced.

“I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films,” said Miyamoto, on Nintendo’s Twitter. “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

After the massive success of the Super Mario Bros. movie, it was just a matter of time until Nintendo would announce their next film project. I’m surprised that their next film will be live action, but the choice totally makes sense. To say I’m excited is an understatement!
