Katana Maidens ~ Toji no Miko Episode 3 [REVIEW]

By: ThunderheavyarmKanami and Hiyori contine their evasion from the military units. As you may remember from last episode, they were given a contact if they were ever in need of help. Reaching out, they find that the note was actually from the president of Kanami’s school to a retired Toji. Given a safe place to rest and recover, Hiyori questions Kanami on what she saw during the tournament. Which Kanami is only able to reveal she saw a pair of bulging eyes looking at Hiyori when she attacked. Kanami then has a strange dream where she meets another Toji for a practice bout, something they let on has been occurring multiple times before.Meanwhile, the elite guard and the presidents of three schools are at odds on how to proceed. The president of the Renbu branch wants to mobilize all military units and the elite guard against the two fugitives. The Renbu president even meets with Commander Origami to try and authorize a large response, but is turned down. Eventually however, security footage shows the girls leaving with their contact and they’re tracked down to the apartment they’ve been hiding out for the last couple days. The Renbu president dispatches on of her students from the tournament to attack them.Kanami and Hiryor in the meantime, have been introduced to a strange new ally calling himself Ally. He has connections to the development of weapons the maidens use in their fights and reveals he has been working on a new stronger weapon. They’re given a location to meet, but before they can leave they’re attacked. Hiyori manages to remove her attacker’s Utsushi, but this doesn’t slow down her attacker at all. Kanami manages to step in however and disarm her before making their escape again. So much happened in this episode, and I enjoyed the first part. However, the fighting for this one seemed to ignore the power rules. The series has had this strange effect where I get excited about one episode only for the next episode to disappoint me. I feel like part of the problem however, is we are three episodes in and still don’t have a real understanding of the techniques and abilities of this world. That said, it was only a few minutes of disappointment and I enjoyed the vast majority of the episode still. I really do hope that they explain the powers in the next few episodes though and how they actually work. Otherwise it just comes off as some overpowered abilities.
