Just Crow Things - Second Opinion [Review]
I took another look at Just Crow Things, and Crowy just wants to watch the world burn.
I also received a review code for Just Crow Things, which Mia Berra previously covered here. It turns out this won’t be much of a second opinion because I agree with her about the game. I immensely enjoyed this game from Unbound Creations about sowing chaos as a cute little crow.
From the game’s Steam description:
You're a little crow trying to prove herself to the world. Make new animal friends, poop on unsuspecting hoomans, and steal all the shiny trinkets! Each level is a little sandbox full of fun items to discover and puzzles to solve, while leaving a bit of chaos behind. Why? Just caws!
Just Crow Things is a game about joyful chaos and destruction. Each level is a small sandbox created around a theme—a town, ancient Egypt, a spooky forest, and many more—where you earn up to 150 points by doing quests for other animals that mainly involve some kind of mischief. 100 points are enough to finish a level, but optional missions like flight challenges pad things out. Some levels feature creative setups beyond the simple point threshold. For example, one of the areas is about a medieval rivalry between cat and dog kingdoms, and the missions you do garner favor for one side or the other, with different outcomes possible in the end.
It took me some time to master the game’s flight mechanics, where you must alternate between flapping and timed dives to get the best speed and altitude. The optional flight challenges are an excellent tool for practicing the techniques. Besides flying, Crowy can also snag things in her beak and use certain items as tools. Thank goodness real crows haven’t developed the ability to wield blowtorches. Pooping is also a tool at your disposal, and certain foods will change how it works. Besides the normal white droppings, you can have super stinky poops, freezing poops, and more.
The game is adorable visually, with cute cartoonish designs for all the animals. Just Crow Things’ colorful 3D graphics complement the playful action wonderfully. Crowy is amazing. I couldn’t get enough of her emotionless, unblinking, huge eyes. Somehow, along with her squawk, they made the action even funnier.
Just Crow Things is a great game, particularly well suited for the Steam Deck or other portable systems like the Nintendo Switch. The game’s finite sandbox levels perfectly portion the gameplay into short sections you can enjoy on the go or pick up and put down as you please.
Just Crow Things is available on PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One / Series X|S.
