Fullmetal Alchemist: Fullmetal Edition Vol. 1 (Manga Review)

By: RogueSymbiote

The Elric brothers are back and better than ever! Viz Media has rereleased the massively popular Fullmetal Alchemist manga with the Fullmetal Edition Vol. 1. Edward and Alphonse are on a mission to restore their bodies after an attempt at human transmutation goes catastrophically wrong. In desperate need of answers, Edward has become a State Alchemist. Their quest for restoration will prove to be more difficult and dangerous then they could have ever imagined.

Vol. 1 of the Fullmetal Edition collects the first 6 chapters of this epic saga. The Elric brothers encounter a false prophet, corrupt military lieutenant, band of thieves, demented scientist, and a man hellbent on eliminating alchemists who have “strayed from the path of God.” While their abilities and strength are impressive, the Elrics are still very young. They have been forced to leave their childhood behind and face demons more terrifying than your darkest nightmares. Alchemy requires the law of equivalent exchange. In order to regain their original bodies, what must they give in return?

Review

As a massive fan of the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood anime, I was beyond excited to read the manga. I was not disappointed. The humor and action on the page are palpable. It felt like I was just watching the anime rather than reading. The art is absolutely beautiful, and the diverse use of panels keep the story flowing well. The pacing is executed flawlessly, and the character designs are some of my favorites in all anime/manga. The overall concept behind Fullmetal Alchemist is genius. Imagination has no bounds when it comes to alchemy which makes for some mind-blowing encounters. Fullmetal Alchemist will take you on an emotional journey that will have you clamoring for more.

This deluxe collector’s edition comes with an updated translation and new lettering on high quality paper. The hardcover includes sketches and notes on early character designs by author Hiromu Arakawa. With beautiful new cover art and a select few color pages, this deluxe collector’s edition is a must have for any Fullmetal Alchemist fan. Even the hardcover itself is impressive with red reflective lettering and an embossed transmutation circle. This set will look incredible on display so don’t miss out on owning it! I love everything about this product. If you have never read Fullmetal Alchemist, this is the edition to buy! You can find it right here on Viz Media's online store.Note: Viz Media provided us with a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
